New NFL rules!!

Are they going to hurt the game. I must have seen at leat a half dozen calls of what they say are illegal hits either to the quarterback or the wide receivers. A couple were legit but most were not. I found myself frustrated with allot of these calls. Your thoughts??

Whatever the new rules are, they are either in favor of beheading quarterbacks or the officials aren't making the right calls. I'm still incredulous at the non-call on the illegal hit that Trent Green took -- and I hate KC!

That was a vicous hit, though the timing of it is all so fast. Not suppose to hit the quarterback if he is already in his slide. Lions got called for that one.

I think NFL referees should concern themselves with knowing and applying the old rules before attempting to grasp any new ones.

The quarterbacks and wide receivers do need to be protected when they are in certain vulnerable situations. I'd rather see the NFL err on the side of caution to help prevent injuries. This doesn't hurt the games whatsoever. As always, if the players violate the rules then they get penalized. You can sit there and "analyze" every penalty call if wanting to, but I think over the course of a season calls like this basically even out for the teams.

The bumping of WR came from the INDI / NE playoff game a couple of years ago. It's very inconsistant but considering that there should be a penalty every single down, this isn't a surprise image

So, what were the rules back in 1922?

No more than 10 deaths per game allowed.

Some of the officials think it is their duty to take control of games, and I think it is ridiculous the amount of control these refs are able to have on the outcome of a game. There are way too many rules concerning minor stuff like bumping a guy after he has thrown the ball or slid, or bumping a wide receiver as he is running a route, or grabbing a guys facemask in the process of tackling him. Some of the calls that were made and not made in week 1 were pathetic. I was at the Lions game, they called a terrible personal foul on a Seattle player for bumping into Kitna almost exactly as he was releasing a ball, and didn't call Seattle for clobbering the Detroit kick returner before the ball even got to him.

The NFL needs to loosen up the rules about bumping into QB's or K's after they've just released the ball. So what if the kicker gets knocked on his butt after he kicks the ball and the kick is nearly blocked but missed. It wasn't like the other team was intentionally going after the kicker to try to clobber him, they just wanted to try to block the kick. And so what if the QB gets taken down a split second after he releases the ball because the defender is already in the air to tackle him when he's in the process of making the throw. How is the defender supposed to know he's not just faking the throw? And if the QB runs and slides and another player is ready to tackle him just as he slides, tough luck for the QB if he gets jumped when he tried to run the ball. These wimp rules need to go. If it's a blatent hit with intent, then it's a penalty, but other than that...

On a side note - I have always been against offensive holding as a penalty. Let them hold, it'll open up the game and make things a lot more exciting. If they grab a guy and throw him to the ground, that's a penalty, but minor holding should be perfectly fine. Or at least reduce the holding penalty to 5 yards, 10 is excessive punishment.

I think the new rule banning lining up over center on placekicking attempts is patently ridiculous.
