I mean, is there anything here more than old nails, buggy chains, stirrups, and old bullets?

Trick is in knowing where to look for them.
Go to your local library and look at historical maps of Dallas. Pay attention to where the first parks were and if they are still there.
Look for roadwork being done around town where the sidewalk may be torn up exposing the dirt underneath. Remember, it is highly likely that the sidewalk was still a sidewalk before it was paved or cemented over.
Read some local history book on the city and surrounding area, especially books written by local authors. you can find a lot of good info in them.
Find the older neighborhoods in town, those areas where the original founding families lived and look for sites to hunt around there.
You may be pleasently surprised what you can discover.
Remember, check your local regulations regarding detecting on public land and always get permission when on private property.
