latest number of 20th anniversary Eagle sets sold by US Mint

The September 19th issue of Numismatic News that I just received today states that the gold 3 coin set sold out in two days.

They stated the silver 3 coin set is about 40% sold and list the number at 103,205.

The 2 coin gold/silver set number list as 14,783 sold.

My thoughts.... I do not know what to think about these numbers, and just not sure that I believe them. 103,205 seems...... strange to me. Especially since one poster mentioned that a Mint employee said that over 150,000 had been sold.... over a week ago or so on the Labor Day weekend. The NN article did not give the cutoff date that these numbers were valid for. With these numbers.... I do believe the 2 coin set will definitely sell out.

What do you think? The public out of money?? The article did say these sets definitely affected the buffalo gold sales..... only 3,000 additional proof buffalos were ordered.

One final comment on the article..... the 2006 Legacy sets are nearly sold out at 42,056!!! Seems to be some demand for these also!

edited for my usual spelling mistakes!!

    Thank you for the info.
Would be good to know the date the rag got the numbers from the mint.

Bull, the mint has no idea what numbers they have.

The 4th issue of Num News said the same number.

If those were the numbers reported on the 4th (2 issues ago).... that would sound more correct to me. Like I said.... 103,000 of the silver sets sure doesn't sound right. Also sounds like Numismatic News may have gotten some numbers scrambled....

If the paper wished to give useful information
they would have included three things:

    1. The specific date the number of sets were sold

    2. The number of orders from the start of the 20th anniv. set sale, untill
    the report date

That would allow us to compute how many of each set were everaged per order.

The information given was rather useless. Coin World should do some actual investigative

reporting rather then reprinting Mint blurbs.

They went on sale Aug 30th.

Coin World says they sold 55,000 the first day. 3 - coin silver
    and 7,500 2 - coin set.

103,205 sold as of Sept. 4, per Numismatic News.

Sept 4th was only 6 days of selling, which included the holiday.

Now we are a week past that.

For reference Coin World says that for the San Fran Silver, as of Aug. 20 sold 59,424 Proofs and 30,226 Unc. THEN in the next issue they say as of Aug. 27th they sold 84,229 Proofs and 39,587 Unc. SO for 1 week they sold 25,000 Proofs and 9,000 Unc of the San Fran Silver dollar for a total of 34,000 coins.

Figuring the San Fran has been on sale for 2 weeks longer, and are NOT Eagles, you have to figure they are AT LEAST fast approaching 200,000 Eagle Sets.

I'd give it another week, maybe two for a sell out.

I got one of the silver sets.

I would have loved to be able to get all three sets, but money's a little tight right now image
  • Coin World is reporting, from the Sept 11 Mint sales report, that 129,888 out of 250,000 silver coin sets were sold. For the gold and silver set, 18,025 out of 20,000 were sold. Of course, Sept 11 was before the Mint announced the uncirculated coins would be available individually and without limits.
