<< <i>It's a tough call for the average homeowner to make on the spot. In many states you have to prove that you felt he was still a threat. Was he still maybe reaching for a gun? You have to be prepared for questions. >>
Shoot them, and make sure they're dead. And I have no qualms about shooting them in the back as they are leaving. My justification, I was still in fear for my life. It only takes a split second for them to change their mind and come back to remove the witnesses, and if they were crazy enough to come in the first time that is proof enough to me that they could decide to come back to make sure I can't identify them. And I'm not going to take that risk. His back may have been toward me when I fired, but he could have turned and shot me at any moment.
<< <i>Remember with an armed intruder, if your gonna shoot them,
then finish the job and shoot to kill. If you wound them, they will
be out on bail and do a repeat visit. >>
Oh and DON'T follow the urban legend advice, ie "shoot him on the front porch and then drag him indoors". CSI can do amazing things analyzing drag marks, tracking back trajectories and so on.

My advice would be to think through multiple different scenarios as a mental exercise, well before it ever happens (god forbid). >>
You are absolutely correct. If you draw your gun and use it, you will be going to jail for a least a little bit. The police "first response" to any situation involving guns is incident suppression, which means every one gets put into the car and taken to jail to sort the incident out. This comes from a former friend who was a sheriff's deputy. Don't touch or drag anything in a crime scene and if you use the gun, all you say to police is, "I feared for my life.", until you can get a lawyer.

Wilmette(One of the Richest in Chicago) is a town north of Skokie...everyone has heard of Skokie, Illinois...they are a no fence neighborhood...You will remember a few years back when that Kid from that White Supremest group or Nazi group kept Chicago going crazy when he was doing all the drive bys in different Neighborhoods....Well he was from Wilmette. As I recall his parents sat on the City board and I believe one of his parents was a Lawyer.

How did the victims know the men were "black"?
Is this going to turn out to be a "Susan Smith" incident with insurance involved?

All I know is that if it were my dogs, I would hunt the scum down myself. The sheppard was 5 months old in this picture and is now a lean, mean 18 month old robber eating machine!!!

Exactly. I'd not be happy about the loss of the coins, but they'd be insured and I could be more or less made whole. On the other hand, insurance can't replace my dog, and I'd want to go out and find the scumbags who would kill my dog.
The only people who follow gun laws are law abiding citizens. Criminals by their very nature do not follow the law and therefor do not follow gun laws. It's pointless to pass gun laws to try and curb crime. Tougher penalties is the answer.

And I take it the kid's parents are pretty much how I described the majority of the locals in that town - a bunch of soft-padded, feeble-minded, anti-gun morons - and, might I add, these are the same people who drive Volvos and Saabs because "they're safe" (but are not when their owners can't even drive down without causing an accident in the first place), stupid enough to pay $3-4 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, and think credit cards are the greatest invention man has ever made ! So, in other words, the town is overrunned with YUPPIES!
The kid's parents is on the city board - it was probably these knuckleheads that came up with the stupid (and very unconstitutional) gun law in the first place - well, you have to figure what makes these goombas think!
