The seller is a foum member and a great guy, based upon my limited experiences/interactions/transactions with him.

I have a question about the originality of the toning - I think it's suspect (edited to add: and would love to see it in hand in order to feel more strongly one way or the other).

To his credit, he did include this in his listing:

"Grading Note:

In my opinion SEGS usually grades higher than both PCGS and myself.

I think this is a nice gem coin with super eye appeal but I doubt PCGS would grade it 67."

That is AT and that look has been around for quite a while. NGC and PCGS will not slab that look anymore, in general.

I honestly don't know how this coin came to be toned like this. I think it looks great. It has many of the same colors that are on some of the Morgans I have, though not in the same pattern. When I first saw the Texas I thought it was NT. I know CoinGuy1 and TomB know more about toned coins than I and I respect their opinion so would have to guess that PCGS would not slab this coin.

Neither I nor the person I got it from have sent it for grading anywhere. The person I got it from got it from a forum member who hasn't posted here in a long time (2 years?). That person sold lots of toned coins at shows.

If it did grade I think it would go at least 65.

I was WOW'd by the look so I put that in the title. How many warnings do I get?

So, there are no potential Ebay bidders out there in "coinland" who are unaware of this thread or aware of it, but will form their own opinions? I think that overstates the significance of this thread a tad and doesn't give Ebay's presence quite enough credit .

I see no reason to share how this was done, but I do see value in telling you more about the types of coins you may see processed in this manner. These AT pieces are usually commems and are typically BTW, WC and Texas issues with some other issues included. If you see one of these issues with this toning it is definitely a reason to become suspicious. The colors are generally wrong in that the blues and violets mix in an unusual way that yields colors that are not pure, but look somewhat muddy. The greens that are produced are similar in that they are not emerald, but are a dirty green. The crackle pattern is also quite unusual if you view the coin with a loupe. On a Mint Set toned Washington you may see the colors appear somewhat crackled but the colors will be merged into the metal whereas on these pieces it almost appears as though a tight sheet is put around the coin and the crackling exposes areas in the sheet.

It seems to have been my bad luck over the years to encounter several dozen of the Texas commems that were treated in this manner, though I have never purchased one, and that is part of the reason why I have been so resolved on the toning of this coin. Obviously, I don't have the coin in-hand, but I think I can interpret the images and this coin has the prototypical look for this method on this issue. It's unfortunate, but someone or some number of folks, produced a number of Texas commems with this look. PCGS and NGC started to bag coins with this patter in the late 1980s to early 1990s, but you may find an old holdered BTW at a show.

I think I know the source for Carl's coin in that a few years ago one of our board members had bought a small stash of raw Texas commems toned like this and he asked me to look at them for him at a Baltimore show. I told him they were all AT, at which point I believe he blanched because he paid strong for them. He submitted them to PCGS and they all bagged and then was going to submit them to NGC, but I told him that they would bag there too, and that the only service I could see slabbing them would be SEGS. Well, this might be one of those coins.

As a fairly new poster here, I didn't realize that you were also a poster here or I would not have drawn attention to the auction in question as I've already learned that there is quite a division on this forum as to AT/NT. I would not have wanted to impair your auction in any way. Please accept my apology if any damage was done.
I think the coin is beautiful and depending on where it ends up would have no problem bidding on it.

I didn't say anything regarding not caring about the effect on Carl's sale - I like Carl and do care. However, you had stated: "After all, it bears directly on what it sells for now IMO". Yet, there is an excellent chance, based upon the number of Ebay bidders out there, that what posters say here will have no affect whatsoever on the sale price.

..................and i was a bidder on the coin somewhere around MS63 at $155. judging from the pictures there's no reason to believe it's AT since it looks like other coins with subtle rim tone. judging from Tom's experience, i'm glad i was outbid!!
