Help Please

I am trying to find some info on a Coins of the World collection that was handed out by Gulf Oil canada back in the early 70's. It was a promotion of some type. Each coin sits in a blue cardoard folder. Some coins appear to be of metal and some of plastic or lighter weight.
Any ideas?

I've never heard of that particular set, but there are many folks here who might know what you're referring to. Photos would help, if you can post them here, too image

  • Thanks for the welcome. I hope the images work. They aren't very good but will give people some idea. This set was given to me by my dad who worked at the gas and car lot dealership. Other than that I have no idea. I would appreciate any help.

unfortunately my mother tape them in as they kept falling out. The cardboard was a great idea but not sufficient enough to hold them quite in.

    Welcome to the forum!

That's a nice and interesting set you have. I can't tell you anything about the promo or the company, but I can tell something about the coins.

Despite the tape, from this distance, at least, most coins look to be in very nice condition. If there is any residue on the coins you can try carefully soaking them in pure acetone (one of the very few acceptable ways of cleaning coins).

It seems most of the coins are from the same period, probably when the set was issued. Barring any scarcities based on date, it looks like most are fairly common.

Those really light ones, the white metal ones are aluminum. image

    Cool. image

    I've never seen these before.

Every singlew one of those is quite common as a type coin but there are many
rarities in moderns and the chances of having one here is quite good. People sim-
ply weren't saving many modern coins back in the early '70's so there are large
numbers of recognized and unrecognized rarities possible. Keep in mint that these
won't have much premium unless they're in unc and it's difficult to tell the grade
    from the picture.

Do you remember details of how they made these available?

    Welcome aboard.

  • I asked my father and he recalls that Gulf gave away a coin to customers for each gasoline fill up. However, he is not 100% sure. He remembers looking through the piles of coins to be able to successfully complete a set for each of my siblings and I. My dad stated that coins were given out randomly so he feels that only a few sets would have been completed during the promotional time.
Thank you for all your help and I hope this provides more information.

Acetone those coins to get the tape residue off

Will not harm coins or take any type of tone off

  • Thanks I will get that done. I have truly appreciated everyones help. Thanks
  • Does anyone know if this set is of any monetary value or where I would go to see?
I am trying to gather as much info as a record to be kept with set. It holds much sentimental value that is far worth more than money.

    Thanks again
