Opinions please - best value 2006 FB product ?

I haven't done FB in quite awhile - I'm thinking about a 2006 product ---- Topps vs Topps Chrome vs Topps Heritage.

Any opinions as to what could offer a better bang for the buck?.....or could be most popular? I'm not looking to get rich, but maybe sell an auto or rookie or something to help pay for the box.

How does Heritage FB sell?

Thanks for the opinions all!

  • Probably Topps Chrome, the auto's sell for about $20 per, maybe more. However, I paid $70 for my 3 hobby boxes from an actual baseball card store. Prices on ebay are about the same $60-70 per box. It's hard to breakdown any given box and make money. It's hard to break open a box and break even!
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

This is my first post here, but I agree with kingraider in that topps chrome is probably the best set out of the three you mentioned. As a related question, does anyone here know if they plan on releasing a Bowman Chrome edition this year? I haven't been able to find any info out on them if they are.

Unless you're a set builder, I would say none. Just buy the cards you want/need off eBay and save yourself the aggrevation of potentially opening a box of crap.

I fear that is the 100% correct advice.

60 scratch-off lottery tickets are just as much fun (for me),
and quite often I will scratch a good one.

I agree whole heartedly with storm on that. Except that I put together the whole set including the autos. I stop opening packs when I either get the top autos or the majority of them. Then I move to ebay to finish it off. I then hold on to the unopened boxes praying for a great rookie crop. This years might be one of those down the road.

Plus I forgot to mention that they are doing a Favre set like they did with Manning last year.

I did some banking on SPx. The jersey auto combos are always nice. I purchased a case and it should be shipping to me in the next few days!! It will be so tempting to rip.....but don't know if I want to take the chance.

Have some fun with low-end boxes.

You can pick up a hobby box of Score (36 packs, 8 cards per pack) for about $20 at a show. Rookies are 1 per pack (not SPed), and there is 1 glossy parallel per pack (so expect that you'll get about 5 glossy rookies in a box). 55 rookies are included in the set.

Serial #ed parallels run at least 6 per box, and there are randomly inserted autos (I got 1 in 5 boxes)

There are also Hot Rookies inserts (figure about 4 per box of the 10-card insert set), with glossy parallels and serial #ed parallels available of these too.

My highlights from my boxes were the auto (Jim Sorgi), Reggie Bush, Maurice Stovall, and DeAngelo Williams #ed Hot Rookies (Bush #/600 and Stovall and Williams #/750), Tomlinson #/120 and #/750, Favre #/600, and P. Manning #/750. I averaged over 7 #ed parallels per box.

Collation within a box is very good.

Yes, Bowman Chrome comes out around 12/26/06. One of the last products released, after even SPA but before Contenders (I think).

SPA is going to be hot this year, it's almost $150 a box already to reserve it. I used to be a big fan of the regular rookies from Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome, but they never sell for anything on Ebay. Even in PSA 10 grade, I'm lucky to get $10 for anything but the top two or three rookies a season. I prefer Contenders and SPA, but you can really get shafted by either one (i.e. a box with absolutely nothing of value in it).

  • I was shocked when I saw the pre-sell prices on SPA. $1599 for a 12 box case. $135-$145 per box. I usually buy 2-3 cases a year. Break 1, save the other 2. With the price increases, and boxes not delivering their value, I'm thinking of buying just 1 case and going to Ebay to fill the rest of the set.
Interesting side note. I recently bought a few rack cases of 2006 Topps Football. I really only bought them because I haven't seen rack packs in awhile and the product wasn't that expensive. As I was ripping the 3 pack racks, one of the packs would have old Topps cards. They randomly inserted cards from the 60's, 70's, and 80's into the packs (normally 3 vintage cards per rack). The years I was getting were 89 (I know crap), 80, 81, 82, 83 and 85. No big deal since I wasn't expecting the older cards. What surprised me though were many of the cards were gradeable. I'm not talking PSA 7 or 8, but PSA 9 to 10 qualityimage
Now I haven't pulled any big RC's, but the fact that the cards were in such good condition really surprised me. Good fun for the money.

    Frank,

I am glad I only bought one Rack pack. First it was a card short, second my three vintage 80's card were far from gradable, third the price was unreal (bought for MSRP).

I know the SP Authentic is considered the best, but for me and the cost of losing alot of dough by getting nothing in a box, I enjoy the Topps and Bowman chrome cards. I know it is due to being early on from the release date, but Leinart and Cutler SE Refractors raw out of the topps chrome set are going for $30-40 each, with Bush going for more of course.
