reference books I bought...

Adams, Edgar H., The Julius Guttag Collection of Latin American Coins

Brunk, Gregory G., World Countermarks on Medieval and Modern Coins

Furber, E. A., The Coinages of Latin America and the Caribbean

I have only thumbed through them quickly, but they seem pretty helpful and full of history and research

I received 3 books in the mail Friday from eBay purchases, all relate to Conder tokens:

    Commercial Coins 1787 - 1804 by R. C. Bell, published 1963
Tokens of the Eighteenth Century Connected With Booksellers & Bookmakers by W. Longman, published 1916
Tradesmen's Tokens of the 18th Century by James Atkins, published 1892

The last book at one time resided in the Chelsea Public Library. I believe Wybrit was the first person to check the book out.

19th & 20th Century coins from Great Britain and the Realm
  • I recently heard that the Atkins book on Tokens has a very good listing of Australian Tokens, is this correct?

One dealer showed me the Atkins 1893 Book on Coins of Commmonwealth Countries and said the tokens section is still the best reference on Australian Tokens.

Apologies coinkat for thread hijack image

The Atkins book you are probably referring to is The Coins and Tokens of the Possessions and Colonies of the British Empire Link

The Atkins book I just got appears to only deal with Conder tokens.

  • Thanks for that, most helpful image
  • The Atkins book that Farthing got is the one that replaced Conder as the standard reference on Conder tokens and remained the standard until Dalton & Hamer came out in 1910. I'm envious. I've seen two or three copies of Conder (still haven't managed to aquire one) but I haven't seen a copy of Atkins. I can't imagine that Atkins is actually scarcer than Conder, I probably just haven't ben lucky enough to find one yet.
  • Been delving around in that Charles Davis site and spent my entire budget for the next year or so already.

Why do the references you need cost about the same as the GDP of a small nation?image

Finally found that dang book on the English Gold proofs and patterns I've been hunting for ages.

  • Most interested in your assessment of: Furber, E. A., The Coinages of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Also, did you purchase the original 1929 edn. or the 1974 reprint of the Guttag? I've not compared the two editions. If you have the 1974 edn. please check the update found in the last 15 pages. Thanks. Bob

Okay... good question about the 1974 edition which is the one I have. The 1974 edition I have does not have an update within the last 15-30 pages. The edition I have is from Quarterman Publications.

The Coinages of Latin America contains alot of history associated with the times and the coinage... please keep in mind that I haven't read this yet but it strikes me as having some interesting history that would be quite helpful. I think I will like this one... more later. please give me some time with this one
