What would you say is better or equal to?

When you have a card gradded, would a PSA 9oc be better then a PSA7nq or and PSA8nq? Thanks for the tips.

IMHO better than a 7 NQ but worse than a PSA 8 NQ.

    I agree.

On the set registry, qualifiers count as two grades lower, thus a 9oc = a 7nq.

How OC? Some 9OCs could qualify as PSA 7s and be considered high-end 7s. Others are centered awfully and would end up as a PSA 3 or below if you wanted them in a NQ holder.

That said, 9OCs usually sell on eBay for within the range of PSA 7s, because their registry value is equivalent.

Well the card i was refering to is a 1968 Topps Jim Palmer I already have a PSA 7 then i had another one graded and it came out to be a 9oc so should i keep the PSA 7 for my set registry and sell the PSA 9oc or the other way? Thanks everyone for your replies.

Can you give us a scan of both? Might be fun to see the variety of opinions about the two cards. I tend to prefer sharp corners, focused picture, bright colors, and gloss. Centering is only an issue for me when it becomes a distraction.

Forget the grade- which is the better card? That is all that should really matter. There is a decent chance that if you cracked them they'd come back graded differently next time, but your preference will probably always be for the same card. Keep the one YOU like.

That is funny and interesting about collecting. I am just the opposite (as it applies to vintage). To me, it's all about centering and the rest are far down the list. I would take a perfectly centered PSA 6 over a 70/30 centered PSA 8 every time.
  • Here is a good example of a card with and without a qualifier...

Personally I rather have the PSA 3... image
  • I'm closer to Grif's answer.

It's all about eye appeal for me. Sometimes a 9OC can look ok, especially when it is OC top to bottom as opposed to side to side.
If you are actually in the position to compare two examples; choose the one you'll be most happy with when you but your thumb over the flip.

  • It may just be the difference in the scans, but I think the PSA 5 (MC) Chief Bender above looks a lot nicer than the PSA 3. The colors are much richer and brighter.
