  • All gold is good, but I am just a little biased.

The small coins provide an affordable way for people to get a nice set together.

Nice find Wayne. The coin on the bottom row all the way over to the left is Turkish and commemorates Admiral Piri Reis and the map he drew in 1513. If you want to read a story that will absolutely blow your mind, Google "Piri Reis" and read about one of the great mysteries of the world. This guy drew a map of the west coast of Africa, the east coast of South America and the north coast of Antarctica that was so accurate that it has been used by the US Navy's Hydrographic Institute to correct modern day maps. His map was issued 300 years before Antarctica was actually "discovered"! He was able to determine the circumference of the globe to within 50 miles of its actual measurement. However, the most amazing part of this story is that when he produced his map, the north Coast of Antarctica was covered under a cap of ice that was a MILE thick, and had been in that state for over 6,000 years!!!!! Recently obtained a British 1844 Atlas and they had only mapped the extent of some of the ice shelf, they still did not know about the Antarctic continent !

There has been some pretty amazing revelations coming out about some of the early explorers. Still reckon they are brave souls to head off into the great unknown like that and then find their way back. Not many landmarks at sea.
