VCBC giveaway- all gone

I"ve got 8 issues of VCBC ( Vintage and Classic Baseball Collector-The Journal of Baseball's Rare Collectables and its History) issue # 17. It has articles on the 1895 Temple Cup (precursor to the World Series), '20's exhibit cards, '60 Topps set, The National from a collectors perspective, Vintage baseball trivia, '11 Pacific Coast biscuit set, and about a dozen other articles. Before Dennis Purdy sold it it was one of the best hobby magazines ever, pulling no punches.
The first 8 people to pm me with their address get one, free. The only thing I ask is the next time you see a kid selling something- girl scout cookies, little league candy bars, carwash tickets, whatever, you buy $5. more than you would have.

Thank you Griffins!! Not winter here in Bar Harbor yet, still a ton of tourist here. But it is getting chilly!

There are more going to Maine? I thought I was the only Mainer on here! image

Nope your not the only one. Machias area and it doesn't really get chilly until it drops down to 0 or so.image
  • What's funny is Griffins is hand delivering mine ... turns out we're only a literal few blocks from each other in Los Angeles.

Wow, your close! My Dad runs a tire shop in Harrington. And my wife and I used to go to Sandys Sales back when I lived down that way.

No kidding! Usually I am one of the only people who live in Maine at the boards I go to. Nice to know I am not alone. image

Wouldn't happen to be Timkin Pike Tires would it?

And Sandy's Sales is a rather unique store for sure. Haven't been in there for probably 5 years as I just never find much but I do try and get into any Marden's stores including the ones in Calais, Ellsworth and Brewer when I can. Have found some great deals including this being my latest

Has some dirt on the logo and don't know how or if I should clean it, but payed only $12.

My best find is 21 complete (Plus 2 incomplete) sets of 1997 Negro League Playing Cards. Beckett online price guide has the individual price of the cards at $184.50. Marden's was selling them 4 for $1.00. I hit the three stores I mentioned and bought everyone they had.image

  • Griffins, do you know what was the last issue that Dennis Purdy published before he sold? BTW, have you seen his new baseball book? Thanks.

    Yeah, thats the place! image

If you go in, Larry is my Dad. He's the best Dad a guy could ever want and a fellow collector. image He is why I love collecting as much as I do.

I haven't been to Sandy's in years either. Living Downeast was hard sometime so I had to stretch the money. I almost dread to think what it's like there now. image

Nice jersey and cards!! I am always in Mardens looking to see what they have, cause you NEVER know. That jersey is freaking sweet! The Ellsworth had some Rangers Ryans in there recently for about $40. And great pick up on the Negro League cards! I would have cleaned out Ellsworth and Bangor if I had found them too. imageimage

Goodsport- Don't know off the top of my head, I think somewhere around the issues in the late 20's but I'll check tonite. It was definitely a lot better with Purdy running it than Betz, but editorially and in terms of reliability. Betz kept taking subscription money and never made good.
Haven't seen or heard of the book, do you have a link?

    Thanks again for this, griffins

  • It's called the Team by Team Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball. I didn't have much time to review it, but it looks to be an account of the better known players of all the teams through the years. I'm sure it is a worthwhile purchase.

I really enjoyed his articles in the old VCBC. The back issues are still available on the VCBC website if anyone is interested. In fact, I ordered 2 issues today, number 1 and 4. I'm looking forward to reading them. Hope everyone enjoys the issues you gave away.

  • Griffins:

Have you or any other board member ordered any back issues from Betz? I did last year and had no problems. However, your comment about him not honoring subscription payments makes me nervous. I should be ok since I payed via Paypal if there is a problem(I Hope).

I ordered a complete run of back issues (minus #7, which a grading company bought up and squashed) last week for a friend, he got it in 3 days. I think they are fine to order from, as long as you don't buy a subscription.
I think they are more flakey than slimy.

Dennis Purdy's last issue as editor was #22, he had a farewell editorial in #23, but Don Betz owned it then. #38 was the last issue.
