Do Registry GSAs deserve a bump in weight?

NGC registry rewards GSAs with a bump in weight.

Should addtl. weight be alloted simply for the plastic surrounding the coin? Why or why not?

Most 1880-1885-CC Morgans come from the GSA hoard; thus, if you could prove that a coin didn't come form the hoard IMO it should get a bump. However, I will admit that GSA CCs in their original holders do command a premium over the cracked-out coins.

  • I do not think they deserve a bump in the registry. One of the reasons behind NGC rewarding them is probably so that people will get their GSAs graded with NGC. Just a guess.

I don't think so, because PCGS identifies GSA coins on it's holders; so PCGS graded GSAs would get the bump too.

  • Personally , I like the way NGC grades the GSA's in their original holders. I wish PCGS would do the same thing , instead of cracking them out.

I actually didn't know that. You learn something everyday.

Here's an example (not my coin, as I would never break one out of the GSA holder):
