There are some nice coins there. I would probably consign a large dealer specializing in world coins for your darkside gold. NEN, perhaps?

    Roman.
  • Those look like some nice 8 escudos. Do you mind if I ask - have they been polished, or is that the camera flash?
  • They weren't polished. I just am starting to learn how to photograph coins and it, my photographing, is even stated in that thread. The funny tint on the coins were due to the color cast by the translucent colored (green and orange) plastic corrugated roofing over my dads front entry porch. I've been photographing the golds there in supposedly natural lighting condition but failed to notice the effect of the roof until I uploaded to the computer.

These coin collection also experieced the ravages of war and my dad was the one tasked by my grandfather to extract these from his bedroom floor secret cubby when the US Forces entered Manila in WW2. Lucky that he did when he did as their residence soon burned down.

<< <i>Edwin Reyes<< collection has other Spanish gold coins, US silver, Spanish silver, Phil during US occupation (first coins minted here) and bills. The former PNAS President, Dr. de Jesus, said back then remarked that this collection has the choicest pieces here in the Philippines. >>

Edwin, I'll forward your post to JustHavingFun. He is in Manila from time to time. Also, MrEureka might have some interest in the South American bits.

It looks like some of the material has been cleaned, so do not attempt to clean any coins yourself going forward as this devalues the coins drastically.

Go back and edit this post, and change your title to add "Philippines and 8 Escudos coins". This will help the interested parties to view the thread.

    Good luck.

Pardon my asking, what is NEN? Also, I saw your sig. I just uploaded 3 Carolus IIII 8Reales dated 1793, 1796 and 1798. The 1793 even has a double-stamped obverse. (I'm getting the hang of this coin coll. terms) LOL
  • sorry. Didn't read the actual thread - I just scanned for the yummy picture.

If you are looking to sell, I might be able to provide you with a lead for the 8 escudos. If you're interested, turn on your PM.

Thank you for helping me. Unfortunately, I'm not aware that I can do that to the thread title but I'll try and find out if I can. Wouldn't that affect the existing links that I posted?

At the far, bottom right of your first post you'll find the "EDIT" button. Only you can edit it. Just make the changes in the TITLE section where you already have Four Generations old coin collection. Hope this helps...gotta run.

Actually, we are looking to sell the entire collection to include the books and any other materials related to it. Well, except for my great-grandmother's "last will and testament" that stated her giving my grandfather her coins. We'll agree to having it photocopied.

I just looked at that link, and you have some wonderful coins in that collection. I must agree with Roman - consign the coins to NEN (Northeast Numismatics) or another similar place that deals in world coins.

    Best of luck !!!

    Thank you AuldFartte,
Know what? I have some of that Dragon reverse by Pistrucci in gold. I'll post some pix in the linked forum tomorrow. I enjoyed visiting your site.image
  • Photographing coins sure is challenging and physically demanding. My shoulders and back hurt from bending over the camera.

I really don't know what you mean by "in good hands". Thanks for wishing me luck.
  • Check out the link again as most photos have been re-shot nect to a metric rule aside from a few more added. I still have a bunch of escudos and sovreigns to crop and upload. A lot of work as I write down the coin's data as I shoot and I'm just getting close to being done with the golds. Next are the silvers which are more than 5x as much as the golds, then other metals. I'm escudo-ed up to my neck now!image
  • Welcome, Edwin.

I'm a loving collector of the US Philippines and just slightly less ardent about the Spanish Philippines. So, I was very appreciative when MacCrimmon alerted me to your thread.

I've tried several times to use the link and it doesn't work (at least for me). Maybe my son -- who's a computer savant -- can get it to work, but he just arrived from the states, and is sleeping.

Perhaps you could give a list of the dates and denominations? And give an alternative means of seeing the pictures?

Again welcome. Sorry you're selling off the collection and best wishes.

    Enjoy!

Just trying to help. See if this works any better.

  • Yes, thank you, White Tornado. Much appreciated.

Good luck Edwin. Looks like a very nice selection. But maybe it's my tired old eyes, but I can't tell the dates and denominations from the scan. Again, if you could give a listing of the denominations that would be helpful.

Or, if you're in the Philippines, I could have a friend meet you to look at them for me.

    Best wishes,

I still am not through with photographing the golds and some of the silver but hopefully I will get to the silvers soon. As for the list, I will as soon as I complete photo-ing because I try to write down particulars as I photograph. Am working alone at photographing and cataloging so for a real greenhorn like me this is a hge undertaking. It is my first time to photograph coins and actually try to learn about them. Ihad to really rush to try and find out about an adequate camera to use and how to use it for the coins. The collections contents itself is something real new to me and most specially their importance or non-importance to those in the know. At least, the first thing I looked up is how to handle them and store them. The best immediate thing that I can do for them in terms of storage is to keep each separate from the other in their own little zip-lock baggies.

    Mr. JustHavingFun,
I'd really appreciate it if your friend can contact me. His knowledge may help make the cataloging quicker since he's more familiar with these. I take too long as I have to search the net for info on every single piece that I photograph and it really consumes a lot of time, the searching, trying to find out what I'm looking at just so I can include as much info with the pix when I post them. As it is, most of the photos lack all infos, just photos!

You're too nice. It is not your eyes but the real bad photo from the camera I initially used. I've since purchased a newer camera, Sony DSC-W-100, which has macro capability and higher resolution. I uploaded a few more of the gold coins, British and Spanish, and will keep on doing so. Here's the link again.
