Question about a Perez-Steele Koufax autograph

The reverse side (see below) of this autographed 1981 Perez-Steele Sandy Koufax card says "5,161/10,000".

Are all 10,000 of these cards autographed, or is "10,000" just the total number of '81 Perez-Steele Koufax cards produced, without autographs? image

P.S. I can't imagine Sandy Koufax signing all those 10,000 Perez-Steele cards! image

NEVER MIND! I DID SOME DIGGING AND I SEE SETS WERE LIMITED TO 10,000 WITHOUT AUTOGRAPHS! I GUESS THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING JUST HOW MANY CARDS WERE AUTOGRAPHED?

RB I think they were auto'd as sets only for the "greatest moments" but not completely sure

    Ted-
I don't think the GM's were issued as auto'd, but the auto's were added later. Given the amount of them signed and the fact that there seems to be stacks of certain players I think it wasn't uncommon to have signings of just GM's.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Interestingly, I remember reading an article in SCD or Tuff Stuff years ago about these cards. If you had a "subscription" you could buy the same numbered set each time there was an update. So, if you had set #1022, you could buy set #1022 for each update. Of course, people loved getting them autographed. There was a HUGE problem, though, with one show that had a bunch of HoFers. It seemed they had tons of people sending in Perez Steele cards to get autographed, but they didn't return the proper card to each owner. So, you send in card #1022 and get back card #5234 in return.

    NOT COOL.

I'm sure some people didn't care, but some people considered it a disaster.

I never heard what happened in the end, but I'd have been *pissed*!

The serial number on the reverse relates to the cards issue size only and has nothing to do with the autograph (which was added after the fact).

Dealers say that the autographed Koufax Great Moment card is tough. Any truth to that, or is it just his popularity that drives up the price?

tkd - it's tough in the sense that Koufax does very few signings - and he's quite expensive when he does.
