A month or so ago, this was heating up to be a great race. Now, not so good! Who's going to win-Liriano, Verlander, or Papelbon?

You might see the Sox shut down Papelbon for the rest of the season, he just had an MRI on his shoulder....it proved to be negative but why take chances at this point. Liriano was on his way but his injury will hurt him, if Detroit wins the division Verlander would get my vote.

With an obvious bias towards my home team, I can't see how either Liriano or Papelbon can be put in the same catagory as Verlander this season. Verlander is undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons for Detroit's success. Liriano, without taking any credit from him, as he is an excellent pitcher, was not a starter at the beginning of the season, and has been hurt for a while now. Perhaps if he played all season he would have compiled better statistics, but he's second best in this race. And while Papelbon has excellent paper stats, he's just not in the same boat as Verlander or Liriano. He has pitched less than half as many innings as Verlander, and he has blown several games that Boston needed to win down the stretch if they wanted to have any chance of competing.

This may turn out to be a great year for first year pitchers.....if that kid Sowers from the Indians had been called up earlier he would be right there with the other three........He's been awesome his last nine starts....

yep, and he is not eligible next year I don't think. What is the cutoff for being a rookie? I know September first time callups are considered rookies the following year

Papelbon had my vote most of the season, but I would probably give it to Verlander at this point.

With Papelbon's injury and pre-injury lack of playing time (can't save a game you are losing, right?), I think it has to go to Verlander. If the Sox didn't suck bigtime after the AS break and Papelbon got opportunities AND didn't get injured, then I think it would have been a close vote for ROY.

I think that rookies are still considered rookies if they didn't bat or pitch certain limits.....does anyone know??? I'm in Cleveland area and believe that Sowers may have exceeded the innings limit......just hope he can keep it going next year and many more after....don't want another Jaret Wright...
