Not my day. I got a reprint of a reprint, then this!
Last Sunday's paper hidden in the want ads - this guy has a cow auction and once in a while
he sells oddball stuff.
I called yesterday, he said the owner had died and his kids were selling his stuff. The owner went to a
lot of baseball games in the 50s and 60s. It was 2 baseballs, one signed only by Clemente and one
signed only by Robinson. He couldn't remember which Robinson.
I did some research into what each was worth in what condition etc, finally figured out what I could spend
if I had to. I went to the bank and withdrew $10K after getting the OK from the wife.
He allowed me to go to see them at 1:30.
Frickin fotoballs.

Don't know, don't collect them. Cards and Cars for me
About 10 years ago they had a sportscard auction at the cow barn. The first card sold was a 53T mantle. I won the auction at $210 and watched in horror while the kid helping flipped the card to me. I was in the 5th row, about 15 feet away. Raw card, no toploader.
They dropped a Koufax rookie in some of the cow crap on the floor.
<< <i>Take the $10K your wife said you could take out, buy 2 old looking balls, forge the autos ( for the sole purpose of fooling her ) then go use the money for something else you want that you know she wouldnt approve of. >>
She loves me, lets me have whatever I want. She gets whatever she wants too. I'm kind of blessed.

No kidding! I'd rather have the flipped 53 mantle than the cow poopy koufax rookie though!
Let me guess, from America's Dairyland?

I third that, this sounds pretty out there. Even in the hills of WV the hillbillies are capable of keeping things out of the cow $h!t.

<< <i>I didn't follow the initial story very well. These were photoballs that were recently manufactured and you obviously didn't pay for them, right? >>
Yep. For 3 days now I've been excited/nervous that at the end of today I would have a (hopefully) jackie robinson and a roberto clemente single signed baseball.
Today was christmas and I got a lump of coal
Sorry but I hate to tell you that your 53 Mantle has some very tiny typing on Mantle's shoulder.

<< <i>I predict the disappointment of many will belong to those who "rip" open the 1975 mini case. Rather than pursue a buy and hold strategy, these buyers will open 'em up, only to find a plethora of O/C, corner dinged 6's. Have fun.

And I predict that nobody is going to get too bent out of shape if a $250 flyer doesn't pan out the way they wanted it to. If taking a $250 hit would qualify as your worst hobby disappointment then you either a) should make sure your proctologist understands that the horseshoe is NOT TO BE REMOVED under any circumstances, or b) have been collecting cards for less than two months.

a buy and hold strategy would work for a single buyer of the case, and perhaps those who buy a full box and grade or just hold it.....for those of us who enjoy the occasional thrill of ripping 30 year old wax packs, we've just saved ourselves a 3 minute visit to a black jack table or a night out drinking with the boys, aw shucks, oh well........this will likely be a celebration of the very act which the majority of the buyers in this venture crave....chewing stale gum
My worst disappointment was when I was about 14. An older guy (40's) that I met at a card show in the late 1980's came over to my house to buy some cards. I was getting started on football while getting out of baseball cards. He had a John Jefferson Rookie and an Earl Campbell rookie that I wanted. Since I did not want baseball cards he filtered through a few boxes and pulled out all of my Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens rookies and Mark McGwire rookies. He probably had 40-50 total cards. All I wanted was two of his cards. We traded one Clemens rookie topps and two Mcgwire 1985 topps. I know that was bad enough. But after he left I noticed he STOLE the entire stack of cards that he had piled up. It was a good 10 Clemens and 10 McGwire and random Ryans from 1975 to 1988 or so.
Nice guy, taking advantage of a young kid.
Now I'm 35 and I appraise collections for co-workers and neighbors so they don't get screwed like I did.
Back in 1989 when I was 13, my brother-in-law (my sisters are all 12+ yrs older than me) got into cards a little, and did some local mall shows here and there around town, but it was mostly just an experimental venture for him. His steady income was from working at a local grocery store bagging groceries. Anyways, 1989 Upper Deck was really hot then, and he was the first to introduce me to them. He dropped by the house one day with my sis to visit, and he told me and my dad that the local Price Club (a predecessor to Costco, that often had cards in stock) was getting a shipment of 1989 Upper Deck that week. $20 a box, no limit. He said that he was gonna go wait in line and pick up a bunch, since they were sure to sell fast (they were already marked up at the card shops for $60 each). He said that if we wanted any boxes too, we could give him the money and he'd get them for us. I pulled the $60 I had been saving up for a card convention, and my dad tossed in another $40 to make it an even 5 boxes. So, he said that he'd be back the next day with the cards. I was SOOOO looking forward to ripping through a few boxes of UD that weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't see him again for 2 months. When we saw him, he simply returned the $100. As it turned out, he didn't have any intention of getting cards for me or my dad, and was using our money as a cash advance on his paycheck so he could scoop up more boxes before they sold out.
Time went on, and all was forgiven in time.
He's not into cards anymore, and the inventory he accumulated for his shows sits in dusty boxes in his garage, where they've been for the past 15 or so years.

About 6 years ago I bought a 90 to 100 year old house that I am redoing. My father-in-law is a carpenter so I hired him to do a lot of work on the house. We had a key hid outside so he could get in the house when he needed to. He has 2 sons that work with him sometimes. Both sons collect/buy and sell cards. About a year after they worked on the house I was in my card closet looking for something and noticed some stuff missing. After finding a few things missing got POed and closed the closet and stopped looking to see what all is missing. I still haven't been through everything but so far I'm missing a 69-70 Basketball set, a 70 Baseball set, a 86-87 Fleer Basketball set, a 87-88 Fleer Basketball set and quite a few 50s-70s singles. I can't prove that they took the cards so there is nothing I can do. Luckly, I had my Mantles and other high dollar cards in a different location. One of these days I'll go through all the boxes and try to figure what all is missing.

Ron I would think opening 1975 packs fesh from a case and from BBCEX, would be the best oppurtunity that you can possibly have cards with sharp corners. Now the O/C thing thats a possibillity. I would hate to open a vintage box of O/C.
I traded all my 5 justice rc's for a 90 donruss Griffey (my 1st time ripped off and learned fast)
I was the only person in town with a magics all rookie Shaq. I never sold my shaqs back then...before the becket came out on it I was showing it off to the old lady dealer, two minutes later I felt like Fonze from waterboy loosing his notebook. I sold it for 19.50 and was crushed when it came out 60 bucks then it exploded.
Biggest mistake... a buddy of mine (dealer) had 60 boxes of 96-97 topps chrome and offered them to me the same price he paid at wal-mart for them. like 40 each!!!!2 months later 300 bucks each. arghhhhh
ohhh....and in 99 I got out of ballcards for a while excluding P. Manning. I bought 2 Vince carter sp's for 70 each...sold one for 400 which was stupid at the time then I keep my psa 9 even when it was selling for over a grand!!!!
I knew there were stars, but value certainly wasn't that big of a deal back then. I just knew the shop had cards that I wanted. I asked my folks for more money and when they heard what it was for, refused to fund my "obsession". I had already spent too much money on wax packs up til that point in my life. They finally relented and gave me another $40 to try and get the boxes, but when I went back, the boxes were gone and nobody knew what happened to them.
Ah, fond memories. It was a gold mine, but when you don't have money, you don't have money. The good thing was I was able to fund a year in college with the proceeds from those cards back in the 80's. They weren't all that special to me since I hadn't "really" purchased them like I did the others and while in school, I was broke and figured you couldn't eat cards. Oh well, try not to think about the value of what I had and the others in that box......too much.
