NGC MS-67 Lincolns vs PCGS MS-67 Lincolns

i was curious if anyone knows the difference between what NGC will accept on a high grade MS-67 Lincoln, especially wheats, as compared to PCGS?

to be more specific, is there anyone here who has had experience in the recent past getting wheats into both holders who could expound on the subtle things that each will or won't accept?

i want to try for some high grades as i want to build a registry set for both PCGS and NGC, but looking at the price guide PCGS probaby doesn't give out MS-67s often.

i've certified a couple of wheats as 67s in NGC so i'm reasonably experienced with grading, but PCGS is a whole different affair and is expensive to pursue.

thanks

My experience has been with crossing NGC Wheat’s to PCGS. I have had no problem with all going to equal grades and a couple going full red with PCGS that NGC had graded as R&B. Now I have never crossed any MS 67 coins Memorials or Wheat’s and have had nothing but failure crossing NGC proofs to PCGS.
I am sure others will share their experience.

    I X'd a NGC Lincoln 1926 MS66RB to PCGS without a problem. Mike
  • I have made a few 67 at pcgs.

I have bought a few MS67 from NGC and wanted to throw up at the marks they allow on 67 coins

PCGS will never allow marks like that on a 67 coin

No wonder NGC sell for less then half of what PCGS coins do

I agree. I have some NGC I wouldn't dare send to PCGS.
  • wheats in 67 are TOUGH at PCGS. You'd better be sending in some stunning coins if you expect to see a 67. I have heard now for YEARS that PCGS is much tougher across the board with lincolns than NGC.

PM LincolnsRule, he'll be able to give you specifics about what exactly they are looking for in a 67RD wheat image

  • PCGS is looking for a certain "bang" with a 67. You can send a technical 68 without the bang and get 66's all day long. they look for luster or glow above all else. the fields need to be dang near perfect. Against what the PCGS grading guide says the fileds are much more important than the face. etc. The shoulders need to be free of planchet marks or dang close, which also means you need a strong "O" in "ONE" on the reverse. aside of that you can have a technical 66 with the marks in the right places and a bang and get 67. Glow and luster or that great cherry color.
  • thanks for the help image
  • My experiences on PCGS MS67RDs is that the strike must be full (meaning the bust of Lincoln will look taller and thinner on a fuller struck example while he looks fatter and flatter) Next, I have found that most PCGS MS67RDs have "the look." You look at them and pow it looks like a 67RD. I have found numerous NGC MS67RDs that while there technical grade merits a 67, they just lack the eye appeal in the luster and striking to make the grade at PCGS.
