Any known DDR VAM's for the 1888-S Morgan?

I did not purchase this dollar as a VAM or error coin, it was not presented as such (owner probably didn't know) nor did I notice it when I initially bought the coin. Sorry no pix, but I couldn't get a sharp enough image for anyone to see the detail.

Over the weekend, I noticed this on my 1888-S, using my 5x glass - all the letters in STATES are doubled, as is the O in OF. The F is not, nor are any other letters that I could tell. In the straight letters it is very pronounced, as well as in the O. The S's are slight but noticible. My VAM knowledge is growing, but the only one I am familiar with for this coin is the pitted reverse. Any ideas?

I don't know of one. Make sure it's die doubling and not strike doubling. Look for notched serifs (die doubling) instead of smashed letters (strike doubling). Double-check the mintmark. If that's doubled like the other letters, then you have strike doubling.

There is a really neat 1888-S to look for in addition to the pitted die. It was discovered a few weeks ago (not by me) and has die gouges all over the reverse.

  • John, I checked out the link for the 1888-S 13 in the VAM-E newsletter. Incredible! Can't believe it wasn't discovered yet. Congrats to Logan! It gives some of us hope for finding a new 'strong' discovery.
  • Thanks for the tip DG, that is an excellent site I had not seen before image
I found nothing similar on the few 88-S's listed there; however, I did find an 1888-P VAM 4 DRL that was a very close match to mine.
