1968 Topps Action Stickers Anyone Know Anything About These?

Doesn't look like PSA grades them, and I'm not familiar with them other than what the big beckett says they are "worth". Ebay is pretty thin on them as well, unless my search is flawed.

Does anyone know anything about these? Are they desirable? Collectible? Are they actuallly worth the $120-$800 beckett has them listed at?

They are a very cool Topps test issue...

I believe PSA has graded at least one of them - as an individual panel. They were issued as 3 panel strips. Finding them intact is much more difficult than individual panels, and I think individual panels are worth considerably less than full strips.

In my opinion, they are actually easier to find in proof form than final production. I've seen far more of them at various stages of the printing process or not die-cut... I believe those are worth less than final production ones also.

As far as price, I personally believe they are significantly under-valued, especially in the book. A complete set was sold at one of the big auction houses about a year ago... it went for way more than whatever the book lists them at. They are pretty rare, especially in comparison to the mass-produced 68 Topps and 68 Topps Game cards also issued that year.

  • Complete strips between 120-800 bucks could be considered bargain. I consider individual panels the same as I would consider 71 tattoos in individual form, rather than a complete panel. Like the one A761506 shows, they really are quite a sight to look at and hard to imagine many of them surviving in complete strip form........

These are the ones he has, I have scans incoming from him supposedly.

    #1-with Yaz in the center
    #2 -Killebrew
    #3-F Robinson
    #7-Mantle
    #8-Horlen
    #10-Aaron
    #11-Drysdale
    #12-Clemente
    #13-Yaz
    #16-Santo

The beckett has the Yaz at $250, Mantle @ $800, Aaron $350 and the Horlen and Santo I think are around $40. I don't know the condition yet, or if they are in full strips or cut out or whateve. I really know absolutely nothing about these, but if the price was right and I could actually move them once I got them, I'd consider picking them up.

I'll post scans once I have them.

Thanks for the input so far.

Here's the first scans he sent me, says they are all in about the same condition.

  • Man that is nice. Just out of curiosity, what is he asking for the whole lot?

I'm working on that part. I haven't heard...I've asked twice. image

Edited to say: Are these like 10 inches long? (Total for the 3 panels) If so , I can see why psa hasn't graded them whole.

I would definately put some OT in on that work...........
  • Each panel measures 3 1/4 by 5 1/4. so a complete panel would be over 15 inches. I dont even think GAI could holder a full one, but you never know..........

    Ok, good to know. Thanks.

I see a full 3-panel one that had a small Mantle and full size Aaron (BV $450) sold for $299 on ebay. Should I expect a similar 65% or so sell value on these? I am still waiting to hear on a price but would like to know how much to pay.
  • I didnt see the completed auction on Ebay. What was the title of the auction?
  • Wow. Do Ebay stores stink when doing searches. Skerbe had a complete panel that sold for 18.00 on a BIN! I think that has to be some sort of record for a complete panel being sold ever!

I have a set. They were sold in packs with gum. There are 16 numbered center panels, but only 12 are different. Panels 13 to 16 are double prints, and the triple player panels at the top of 13 to 16 repeat panels from 1 to 4. I agree with Josh that the book prices are useless. Hard set to complete, similar to 69 4 in 1s, but easier than 73 Pin Ups or Comics

No. That auction didn't say "stickers" in the title, so a lot of people's searches would have missed it. Also, the pictures were very small, cropped poorly, and there was no mention of condition. Seller left quite a bit of money on the table.

The searches must stink. I can't find any record of this at all. Do you have a link for this auction?

This is the only one I found, and maybe it's not even the same thing. I did a search for "1968 Topps Action"

    Ebay Auction

The seller of that panel got clobbered... that is a very nice panel and someone stole it for $300. Especially with a Mantle on it, even if it is the small version.

If that panel had been listed properly, with better scans, I think it would have sold for over $1K.

Make sure the stickers are die-cut or that reduces the prices considerably IMO. If they are die-cut/not proofs and you have an opportunity to pick up a group of them that includes that Clemente, you should go for it if the price is reasonable.

Thanks for the link. Seller would be well advised to add the word "TOPPS" somewhere in the listing
in the future. Like maybe in the title? Or the description? Just my opinion. image

They are also a little hard to display. In the packs they came folded with the stickers inward so that what showed was only the backing. Opened up they are too big to display in a clear pocket in a normal size binder, and if you fold them with stickers out to show two player panels, you may weaken the perforation and decrease the value. I have not found a good way to display the full three panels

By die-cut do you mean that each sticker is already cut such that only the image would peel off the backing? Or am I misunderstanding you?
  • Thats about the size of it. On the real deal, each sticker has the perforation, or diecut around it which allows you to pull it off while leaving the rest of the white backing. On the proofs, there is no diecut around each sticker. Just a big long printed strip..............

I agree with baseballfanatic, although the difference in value might depend on the collector. For example the difference in price btween a 67 Stand Up that is die cast versus proof may not be that great due to the extreme scarcity of either. And the 1974 Emblems can be found in cardboard ( proof?) and felt with backing ( regular issue ?) and the prices do not seem to differ much. Some folks are fanatical about proofs.

Seems they are all die-cut and I can have them for the bargain basement price of $3800.

If you can afford them, that's a pretty reasonable price for the lot you listed. I don't think it would be a situation where you could buy them and quickly flip them to make a profit, these are not really the type of cards you do that with.
