If you're collecting registry sets of US Philippine proofs ...

If you're collecting registry sets of US-Philippine proofs, one of the better Manila dealers is offering a complete date set of 5 centavo proofs in gem on eBay. The 5 centavos are particularly hard to find nice, because the nickel spots easily in the hot humid Philippine weather. The coins he's offering are ...

-- 1903 Proof 66: A beautiful type coin

-- 1904 Proof 65: Great strike

-- 1905 Proof 64: PCGS missed the boat on this one. Should be a 65 (only 471 struck)

-- 1906 Proof 65: Another hard date, only 500 struck. Great strike.

-- 1908 Proof 65: The hardest 5 centavo proof in gem. Like the '06, only 500 struck, but slightly less common than the '05.

The coins are being offered individually.

I've been buying from Raffi, the dealer, for maybe 7 years and just a few days ago, a friend sold these to him at a three-way session at my hotel room in Manila where I bought a few raw coins from him (Raffi). That's how I know these coins are nice. I've seen them first hand, examined them, fondled them. I wasn't interested because, if you check my US PI registry set, you'll see I already have 'em.

For the record, these 5-centavo proofs are scarce to rare in this condition; and if you enjoy US-Philippines like I do, this is uncommon opportunity to scoop up a bunch of difficult coins for relative chump change.

Enjoy yourselves,

I have always like these ???US coins. I don't collect them, but I still own a few that I picked up from the junk box at the local coin shop when I was about 10 years old.....34 years ago.

It is a great example of how coin collecting can teach about and get young people involved in history. I think I was the only 10 year old at my school that had any idea that the US had ever been involved with the Philippine government and more specifically that we ever minted coins with both our names on them. As I recall, when I showed the coins to my 5th grade teacher she did not know what to make of them......No clue!

Any how, here is a link to the coins on eBay.

  • Thank you, DRG for the link to the coins. And yes, they are instructive and interesting coins; as you point out, the only ones that are bi-lingual and bi-national.

Today, the US-Philippine coins are generally accepted as US coins. They're listed in Yeoman's Catalog of US Coins (The Red Book). PCGS and NGC include them in their US pop reports. The Registry Sets include them among US coins. Coin World refers to them as US coins. That's why they're rapidly gaining in value. As they gain acceptance as US coins, the collector base expands.

    Thanks again and best wishes,

  • "...at a three-way session..."

image Sounds like fun if it was you & 2 women image
  • Dear RBin Tex:

Oops! Actually it was a four-way session with Raffi, Tainohenka, Bright Young Filipina, and me. Bright Young Filipina, about 5 feet tall, weighing in at about 84 pounds, ain't exactly got enough body mass for two women. But she's got enough good looks for two women.

Jeepers -- my son took me to a swingles bar in D.C.. I'm not a swingler, so sat there slowly drinking a pitcher of beer while my son made the rounds. What slim picking for the poor young fella! An uglesome bunch of chubby piggerooties!

If my son had been lucky enough to be able to bring Bright Young Filipina there, he (I mean she) would have caused a riot.

And that's a swingles bar. Bring her to a coin convention and ... well, I think you'd find a lot of dealers trying to examine her high points with a loupe.

Me -- I'm just having fun -- and that evening I had lots of it.

    Eat your heart out. imageimageimage

I don't know much about Philippine coinage. But I would love to assemble a nice high grade set of Filipina women. image
Now how can I get my wife to understand my need to complete this set? image
