I sold a medium sized collection on ebay that ended on August 22 at around $750. Three days after the auction ended and after an email and a sent invoice, I receive this message from the buyer (16 feedback 100%):
"Hello,
I very happy that I have gained the bid on your item. Please allow me until the middle of next week before I can transfer funds. I have several auctions ending shortly, and I need a few days to transfer what I need to pay you into my paypal accout. If you would be willing to knock off 2.5% off the purchase price I could send you a check on Monday. This way we could both save a little on fees. I just wanted to give you the heads up and let you know that I will be paying you by the end of next week. Please let me know shortly if you are willing to accecpt my deal of a a 2.5% discount for shipping you a check and I would be happy to send you a check that day. Of course, I don't expect you to send the item until my check clears. Thanks Again!
Happy E-Baying "
While it goes against my grain, I responded by agreeing to his request because the collection went for $200 more than I thought it would and I didn't want to take the chance in relisting it, and it was only a few bucks. Plus I was feeling good that day, so what the hell. Monday comes and goes, I email Tuesday, Wed. and Thurs to ask him what's up. I also call and his # is disconnected. He emails me Saturday apologizing and says he'll call me when he gets a chance. Today I sent this message to him:
"I've given you more than enough time to pay for this auction. It ended on August 22, today is September 4. You asked if you could send payment on Monday August 28th, I said that's fine, but getting payment quickly was important to me. Most people would not be this patient on a $700+ item. If I don't have either a check in my hand or the funds in my paypal account by Wed., I will be relisting the collection and leaving negative feedback. I can't wait forever- I hope you understand. "
Was I too harsh? Too lenient? How can somebody bid $750 on something without having the means to pay for it?

"O.K. first, I don't take kindly to threats. I have been working 16 hours a day for the past 4 days and it is a Holiday. Your last message said call me when you can or something to the effect. Now I get ANOTHER threatening email. I was going to overnight a money order on Tuesday. Now, I don't want to do business with you. I would be willing to send you a $25 restocking fee to save a negative feedback, but really I don't think 1 negative feedback is going to hurt me that bad, especially coming from a seller. To tell the truth I am a little tentative to do that considering you have 0 items for sale on ebay, you don't accept paypal (which means all I have is your word that you will ship). You could easily rip me off and your are being aggressive. It's all a little shady. "
And mine:
"It's not really a threat. You bid on something and didn't have the money to pay for it. I've been waiting for payment for over 2 weeks. You were supposed to send payment last Monday and didn't. I do accept Paypal, so I'm not sure where you got that from. In my first email, I said however you wanted to pay for it was fine, as long as payment was received quickly. In fact, I posted this situation on the Collector's Universe forum to ask advice, and everybody there thought I was too lenient. Here's the link: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=537452
These are people who buy and sell on ebay and have thousands of transactions. You're completely in the wrong here. You bid on something and didn't have the money to pay for it. You actually got me to agree to accept less money than the terms of the auction, which is against ebay rules. You said you would send money over a week ago and you didn't. I don't know a seller on ebay who wouldn't give you negative feedback under the circumstances. I could care less that you have been working 16 hour days- that has nothing to do with me waiting over 2 weeks for payment. Why don't you go to the ebay forums, explain the situation, and see who would take your side.
Negative feedback is given to people who don't fulfill their end of the transaction- whether it be buying or selling. You have not paid for an item you bid on. Please explain how it's "threatening" for me to want to give you negative feedback?"
Clearly he never intended on paying for the collection. Yes, I'm the one being shady.

To me it just sounds like he's giving you the run-around. I'd go ahead and file for my ebay fees and make a 2nd chance offer. Hopefully, the runner-up is still interested. Also, I wouldn't accept a $25 payment for the ebay fees. He's cost you a lot of time and he should get hit with a non-payment strike.
"You are totally being an as**le! I was at 10 days and you freaked out. Have you even tried to call me? If you were the 1-800, I don't answer those calls. VOICE MAIL! I would have loved that collection, and yes I had the money, but my car broke down, and I don't just have thousands of dollars laying around. I wanted to talk to you over the phone and ezplain that to you, and that I just got paid and would be sending a money order. There is a process on ebay. I happen to have an outstanding balance from Aug. 22 as well. Yesterday was the first day that the item was autamtically moved to the dispute console. (I didn't start threatening people). Now the guy has 6 more days to pay me or I am going to relist. REMEMBER - THE buyer has the power of the money. You were an as***le once and it cost you $750 in hand on Wednesday. Then you were an as***le again and it cost you the sale. You were an as***le the third time just so you could give me a negative feedback and it cost you $25. I pray 4 U"
$25 restocking fee- what am I Best Buy? Why not just call it what it is- a bribe so I don't give him the neg. His car broke down, he had to work 16 hour days, he has an outstanding balance, his dog died, he broke his leg, his wife left him, blah blah blah....... I would have loved if he actually explained this stuff to me while I was waiting for his money, maybe I would have been a little more sympathetic. Jesus, is it really that hard to only bid on things you have the money to pay for?
By the way, his ebay id is "jefferson1995" if you want to put him on your blocked bidders list.
Lee
I'll add him to my blocked bidders list now. Thanks for the heads up...and thanks for leaving him the Neg he deserved!
My eBay Store
BigCrumbs! I made over $250 last year!
I agree, the guy is a piece of work.
I also put him on by blocked list and I don't even know what that means!
Sorry to hear of your inconvenience - good luck.

Hell with his sob stories he ought to go to Nashville and spew that BS while he strums a guitar like a mechanical monkey. He could have made 750.00 since the auction ended doing just that on a street corner.
As you can tell I am acquiring less and less patience with clowns on ebay that ignore terms and pay whenever they damn well please.
On a side note....
I'm still waiting on a member HERE that disappeared like a fart in the wind on 2 auctions totalling a mere 30.00 or so.
Dan
goose,
what's up with nashvegas...where's the love???
cds, sorry to hear about this. i hope your 2nd chance offer goes thru.
Thanks,

I'm actually dealing with someone who still has not paid me for an auction that also ended on the 22nd. He responded to my first email by saying he'd been sick and that he's paypal the money to me when he was better.
So let me get this straight ... you're well enough to log onto the internet and respond to emails but your health prohibits you from visiting the paypal website? Scumbags.
Good luck Lee.
Arthur
Xan, while your guy may be healthy enough to log on to the internet, he may be too weak to reach the "P" key since it's in the top corner, thereby prohibiting him from going to the Paypal website. I think you should be more understanding. Now that I think about it, maybe my guy had to work 16 hour days because your guy keeps calling out sick.
