SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.

Sad news. Realistically however... when he put himself in the positions he was regularly in, it was not difficult to see something terrible eventually happening to him. The guy played with alligators & crocs, poisonous snakes & spiders, and numerous other deadly animals on a regular basis. And he would often agitate them on purpose to induce reactions for the camera, which is probably exactly what he was doing with the stingray that shot him - they don't just fire off barbs randomly. Sorry to see him go, and hopefully he didn't suffer.
Yeah, he probably would've been a fun guy to puff with. Unless, of course, he had a bunch of potentially dangerous animals with him. Then it would've been like hellish paranoia.
Ill always remember watching the tv...he was in the middle of nowhere and a snake bit him. He had like 6 minutes to live and they would cut to commercial..heck I didn't even move to go to the bathroom, I just sat there and wet my pants so I wouldn't miss the next part...of course they hopped in the jeep and found some shaman with the antidote and he was ok....He lived quite a life. My thoughts and prayers to his family.
I was very sad to hear about ol' Irwin's untimely passing. He was a great entertainer and his love of nature and everything in it were great traits to admire in this day and age of artificial fluff. He loved his work and was great to watch. He will be missed.

We all have a very fragile grip on life, and none more so than those whose life is a wild adventure.
If it turns out that there is something more than the adventures here on this planet, Steve will surely be rewarded for having cared for all of God's scaled and furry creatures.
Steve was a fine fellow, who brought fun and knowledge to the rest of us. All of us will remember him.

Talk about a man who absolutely lived every day of his life with passion and excitment. Not one moment was wasted. We can only hope we bring that much positivity, joy, and love into our own lives and those around us. He will be missed by many a man and beast.
On a side note, I doubt there are many people who didnt see him going out this way....at the hands of one of the animals he loved so much.

Though I did not hear how he had died, must have just missed it on NBC this morning, they were replaying the whole interview they had with him after the incident with his kid and holding them near the crocodile. Thought that was really low on their part, geez the guy died and you play that.

I second all the sentiments and agree with this comment. Steve kept placing himself in harm's way and I guess the odds of a fatal mishap when doing so, finally caught up to him. Turns out that stings from these animals are rarely fatal, but according to news reports it was just bad luck that the sting pierced his heart - but again perhaps the odds just catching up to him as he has narrowly escaped other tragedies.
My opinion is maybe he wasn't as skilled in undersea animals and exploration as he was with land animals which may have caused the mistake. Of course it's a totally different world down there undersea compared to on land, and I don't believe he had anywhere near the experience with sealife as with landlife. This inexperience bottom line probably lead to his death.
Very sad for all concerned. My condolences go out to those who knew him and we are all diminished by the loss of his charming gregarious animal-loving spirit. The barb from the tail of a stingray pierced his heart.

The report is from one of his crew members was that he was not even paying attention to the ray, but accidently backed it into a corner and it turned to get out and caught him in the chest with its barb. He was filming a segment for his childrens show not a Croc Hunter episode.
Apparently, Foster's is considered to be a rather feminine brew Down Under.
RIP, mate.
Traveling in a fried-out combie On a hippie trail, head full of zombie I met a strange lady, she made me nervous She took me in and gave me breakfast And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under? Where women glow and men plunder? Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels He was six foot four and full of muscles I said, "Do you speak-a my language?" He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich And he said,
"I come from a land down under Where beer does flow and men chunder Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay With a slack jaw, and not much to say I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me Because I come from the land of plenty?" And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah) Where women glow and men plunder? Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover."
I am trying to find my favorite Steve Irwin parody clip. It was done in 2002 by Johnboy and Billy for their radio show. He is hunting Osama Bin Laden..

Only the good die young. He seemed to be a real genuinely fine guy. Good family man, good role model. In a world of imminent annihilation, terrorism, and endless news horror stories he was a breath of fresh air. A total shame. Very hard to believe.
I stopped watching Steve on the Tube when he put his newborn baby at risk, feeding an adult crocodile while holding and playing with his new baby! Crazy Michael Jackson type stuff! Really was nuts & made me sick to my stomach!
But before that, I did enjoy watching his nature shows. I do feel for his family and friends! I'll stop, and speak no more ill will of the dead!

He seemed a good guy and loved and helped animals. He was a little off, but OK in my book. RIP Steve Irwin.

He had a love of nature, and respected it from everything I'd ever seen or read...his commercial for ESPN was hilarious as well.
He will be missed.
