How "rare" are blank/white-back or front cards in the 1980s?

Just curious how many (for example) 1988 Topps cards had white fronts or backs with a normal opposite side? Or how many cards had one player on the front and a different player's info on the back?

Not a whole lot out there, but not rare by any stretch of the imagination. Ive seen guys with some pretty big lots on ebay.
  • Do those type of cards still exist today? Were they just an 80s and back thing or did that type of thing happen to cards in the 90s too?

I havent seen modern cards like that...maybe better quality control? But there are some ever since Topps came in existance. 50s, 60's, 70's, 80's

I have a bunch of 82s if you are collecting them.
  • I have a 88 Topps pair with switched backs. Seems to me more difficult to get pairs like that.
Blank/front back is more common in my travels in 87-89 topps and I remember alot of switched backs in early Score. Not too many 89 Fleer and I am still awaiting a response on a blank front FF variation *hint*hint* (GP)
I agree with quality control issues now vs. then.

  • I am still lokking, it is getting closer to finding the box. i literally have a room full of 3200 and 5000 count boxes from when i bought out a few of the local stores. they will turn up. i have alot of time this week hopefully i will find it soon.
  • Speaking of oddities, is there 3 or 2 variations to the #778 1988 Topps Keith Comstock card?

As far as I know, there are 2...the white letter(rarer) and the blue letter.
  • Thanks GP

    3 Blue,White,Yellow.

I have a pretty good E/V book if anyone has questions.

  • What is this book you speak of?

I think I'm gonna buy an 89 Fleer case from bbexchange tonight. Maybe an 88 topps one as well. I seek these variations.

I just picked up a couple of blank front '87s; even started a thread about them, not having checked this thread. I guess not so rare.

  • So it's prolly safe to say there are a few blank fronts of each player in the late 80s at least?
