Home Metal Detecting

Silvered twice yesterday!

Well I decided to return to Goshen Park this weekend where my first 2 IHC's appeared 2 weeks ago.

I walked down to the track where I found the 1945 Merc dime on my last visit. There is a tiny baseball diamond at the very back of the track pictured below.

image

After a half hour of digging clad, I hit this 1944 Washington behind second base.

image

I was pretty pumped to find a big silver, but a sweeter find would appear just 10 or so feet from the Washington!
I dug my plug and flopped it back to see more big silver!

image

I could clearly see the familiar shield of a Seated Liberty! Woo Hoo!! As I pulled it out and cleared the dirt away I was confused for a second at what was on the face of the coin. I could not see the entire date but the last two digits were 5 and 3, which proved to be an 1853 Seated quarter with arrows! My second seated coin!!

image

Then it hit me, it was likely a love token! Anxious to see what mystery the reverse held I flipped it over to see......

image

a nice Masonic symbol engraved across the face. This is definately my most significant find to date and my favorite by far.

Thanks for looking and HH!

Edited title as these were yesterday mornings finds, not todays. image

    Congrats on the finds.

The love token is quite interesting with the compass and ruler.
  • Outstanding! When you are good, the goods just keep coming.

The Masonic token is really sweet!

It looks like it was soldered to something at one point in its life. image

Exactly Amanda. That was what gave me the clue it would be a love token before I turned it over. I was figuring to see a set of initials but was quite surprised to see the compass and square symbol.

The love token is a very nice find. I'm assuming that the back of the coin must have been
milled flat and then the markings were etched into the metal. (incuse, I believe is the correct term)
Is the letter in the middle of the coin a "G"?

I've never seen a Masonic symbol with a Maltese Cross surrounding it. I suggest doing some
research to see if this was a special order of the Masons or maybe you got this coin after
attaining a certain level within the organization...

    Anyway, very nice find!

Please keep us posted if you find out anything interesting about the coin!

Great pics... and I love to see that old dark dirt (compared to light-colored, new/recent fill dirt).

I guess you're going to stick with the Sov?! image
(any ideas on how deep these were?)
  • Way to Go!...Those are some fantastic finds. I especially like the Love Token...I haven't found one of those and they are pretty neat.

Yes. After looking online I have seen the compass and square with and without the "G".
I have found symbols that show a traditional cross, but not the maltese with the other symbols.

Absolutely! This machine is so simple and has a very acurate ID system. I'm sold!

The Wash. was 3-4 inches and the token was around 6-7.

Great finds! Seems like those ballfields are very productive places to search.

Especially if they are on the site of a state fair for 30 years or so during the mid to late 1800's.

I have talked to local detectorist that have hit this park over the last 30 years. Two older fellows pointed in places of their best finds (half-dimes, two cents, a morgan..etc.,etc.) Of all the places they hunted, neither mentioned anything coming from this part of the park. There were very few signals in the large portion of the area I hunted. About 2/3 of the signals I hit were iron...this is easy to tell if using a Sovereign. So my theory is this area was not hit hard as it offered very few signals to TH'ers. I still have a ways to go here before I'm done

Oh, wow... I just got gooseybumps looking at those action shots!

WTG, John- I am highly envious! Green, in fact. Emerald green with envy.

Edit: and for some reason, I missed the part where you said it was a quarter instead of a dime. Geez.

I have only found one Seated quarter, and yours is two years older. Not to mention that it being engraved like that is a big plus.
