I believe that the US should abandon the dollar bill for a few main reasons. Reason one being, it should save money in the long run. $1 and $2 bills, especially the $1's, have an average life span of about a year and a half. The coins could stay around for many more years than that. Thus, decreasing how many dollars have to be produced at the BEP, and saving money. I also prefer coins to dollars, but that's just me. Thank you for my entry, and such a great giveaway!

The United States should abandon one and two dollar bills for coins for a variety of reasons. Unlike dollar bills, coins life spans are much longer. It would also be easier for people who own vending machines. This is because they would only have to program those machines to accept those coins once. On the other hand, bills do change over time and make it frustrating for people who have vending machines and coin/bill operated machines. Lastly, it would be much easier for cash registers because one cannot fit every different denomination in there. Therefore, dollar bills should be abandoned.

The US government is always finding ways to spend money; no problems there. However, they could easily save money by eliminating the dollar bill. The government has tried dollar coins before: the Sacagawea, Eisenhower, & Anthony dollars. Those all failed for one reason… because the dollar bill was still circulating. Once the dollar bill is eliminated we will start reaping rewards! People will have to use the dollar coins. Don’t worry, they’ll get use to it. Using dollar coins would save an estimated 500 million dollars (www.usmint.com). Numismatically speaking, that is enough money to buy over 600,000 proof gold buffaloes!!!

"There has always been a need for small denomination currency in the form of one and two dollar bills, but in todays day and age, the cost of producing these has become well too costly. Producing a coin in the form of this denomination would allow for larger size notes and larger size coin values in todays inflated marketplace. The convenience of the coin instead of the bill would be the simplicity of access of taking out a coin over a bill from your pocket. Transactions would become more fluid and cash-registers would not become flooded with lower denomination bills."

Switching to coins for $1 and $2 will save the US money beause the BEP will no longer have to produce massive amounts of $1 bills to replace those worn out in circulation (3.5 billion in 2005). This will allow the government to focus on coins that can be heavily circulated without showing wear. On top of that, it would give me something else to collect. $2 bills are not really used in circulation anyways, more are kept by collectors, defeating the purpose of printing them, they're kept for novelty value.

I believe that it would be in the United State’s best interests to forgo the production of the dollar bill and limit itself to the dollar coin. The small sized dollar coin has had its share of trouble in its short life, ranging from complaints about similarity in size to a quarter to poor alloy mixing. People complain that it is inconvenient, but repeatedly shoving your wrinkly bill into a vending machine to try and get it accepted is equally inconvenient.
Dollar coins would be a cost-cutting measure as well, for a coin can safely circulate for years while bills are usually pulled from circulation and destroyed after a number of months. A big problem with the Sacagawea dollars that saw circulation was that they were soon removed from circulation because of their novelty. More coins need to be made and bills need to disappear to create a demand for the dollar coins.

I think we shoud get rid of the $1 and $2 bill because no one ever uses the $2 bill it is only for collectors i think since they never circulate. The one dollar bill should stop being made so the dollar coin has to be circulated so it isn't a waste. I work at a grocery store and have never seen a dollar coin spent. Every once in a while when my bank gets them my dad gets them and spends them trying to circulate them but they dont. i dont think that the one dollar bill should be made if dollar coin is. To me the $2 bill and the dollar coin are just collectiblesince they aren't spent.
