PVC damage of Jefferson FS, can anything be done?

Hey Gang,
I had some great winners on last submittion of FS Jeffersons and some disappointing losers.
One loser is a 1941D 6666. Absolutely one of nices 6 unblemish steps I have ever seen pre 1990. It came back as PVC residue.
PVC definition via PCGS: PVC damage
A film, usually green, left on a coin after storage in flips that contain PVC. During the early stage, this film may be clear and sticky.
So, million dollar question of the day; Can the residue be removed without damaging the coin?
Boo as this is a beautiful example of a very early strike that I found in a collection.
Winners! 1996P ms67fs (1 of 22) and 1990D ms66fs (1 of 17). Yeah.
Thanks for any insight.

  • Try a quick soak in acetone (get it from a hardware store and handle with care - very flammable!) If the PVC damage is minor, it may work - if it's major, then the blue/green crud will be gone but the coin will be pitted where the slime used to be. Nothing can be done in that case. Good luck.
