Is the Isle of Man Sov. a true sovereign type?

For collectors of British gold sov. Type sets.... you know...the seven mints around the world (London, Sidney, Bombay, ect.

Should this sovereign be included. It was minted in the 1970's.

Was it minted there or in Great Britian? How many years has it been minted?

Enquiring minds want to know?

Thanks!

Dan

I remember reading that it is; the only two Sov types that have deviated from the usual mints you spoke of are the Isle of Man and the '89 Gibraltar. I looked all over the beautiful Gibraltar Sov, and found one in the 2 Sov size. Only made in '89 (with a very small mintage of 1989 pieces), and having my favorite coin reverse (Una and the Lion), makes this a winner in my eyes. (please pardon the scratches on the slab, i need to have this re-slabbed as the scratches detract from the view of the coin.)

    Doogy,

Thats a Beauty!!! Can see why you love the design....Stunning!

I noticed that the isle of man sov. just has george and no dragon on the reverse.

Did Gibralter also mint a 1 sov denomination?

    Dan,

thanks! I love this coin, and although being modern, is probably the pride of my collection (shhh....don't tell my vintage gold ones)

Anyway, If i recall, this coin was struck in 5 Sov, 2 Sov, 1 Sov, 1/2 Sov; and i recently just missed winning one on Ebay that i was unaware of. Apparantly they also made it in a tiny 12mm size (maybe a 1/4 sov?). I was amazed they could get the Una and the Lion detail on such a small coin, but it was still stunning.

You are probably referring to the Isle of Man - Viking on horseback design issued by the Pobjoy Mint. No, it is not considered as an official Royal Mint UK sovereign issue.

Confirmed, definitely NOT one of the Royal Mint issues or belonging to any of it official branches.

Very pretty though and have a number myself.
