Most underrated/undervalued set in the hobby

What is your vote?

My vote goes for the 1964 Topps Giants. The tall boy special got me to looking on Ebay for some. I also have a few myself. I am now thinking about building a set by maybe buying "lots" of them. I think this set is really a nice looking set and can be had for next to nothing. I guess the fact that they are large has something to do with it, plus the fact that they are fairly plentiful. The Mantle can be had for $25. That's pretty cheap, I say.

that is a tough question to define. a lot depends on the personal preferences of the collector. i think some of the philadelphia football sets are underappreciated by collectors. i think they are awesome looking. most pre-1970 football is great.

on the other end i think the 1986-87 fleer basketball is way overrated. given a choice i would jump at the 1961-62 set.

Personally, I'm a fan of the '64 Topps Giants cards and I'm building the set in all PSA 9s (aside from a couple of star cards and SP cards unless they are affordable). The problem with them is that there are plenty out there in very good shape. So, I'm not sure that it's undervalued, but I do believe that they are underrated because at some point folks are going to realize that they can have a PSA 8 Mickey Mantle '64 card for $150 or less and a PSA 9 for $400 or less and jump on them even more than today.

I like the 64 Giants set myself, but can't really say it's undervalued as the above poster pointed out, there's tons and tons of this set available.

As far as underrated, that's tough. Underrated in terms of value or popularity?

i love that when dealers adveritise limited.

along with the topps baseball you had 1990 score football, 1990 and 1991 hoops basketball and just about everything pro set ever made.
i do love the 1991 pro set. about 800 cards plus a spanish set.

Not sure I'd call the 86-7 fleer basketball set overrated, though, as it was the first basketball set that was made in years, and has tons and tons of rookie cards. Throw in the relative difficulty in pulling quality cards (centering, edges stink in this set) and you have a great set.

I always liked the '64 Giants set, but they are common as dirt and I think there are tons of pristine raw cases out there.
I thought for years that Turkey Reds were undervalued, but once they started getting graded the prices have shot thru the roof.
Right now my vote would go for pre WW2 exhibit cards and '30's Goudey and National Chicle premiums.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • i think a lot of prewar sets are underrated in value and popularity. The R312 set is small, cheap and aesthetically pleasing..yet, doesnt get much fanfare. some of the not so popular goudey issues in the mid 30's...like the 36 issues....are in the same category. The 1920's exhibits also are not quite as popular, yet have great images of HOFers.

It's had to find underrated sets in the post war era. It likely depends on preference. I think certain oddball sets like the topps giants or the bazooka panels dont get as much attention as they should...yet, i feel they are reasonably priced.

i think a lot of basketball sets are underrated and undervalued. But, thats more of a function of the lack of popularity of basketball cards amongst collectors than anything else

I, too, am not sure if the 1964 Topps Giants are underrated or undervalued just as the previous posters have said. But I do believe that the set is a great set to collect compared to the other vintage sets of its era due its abundant supply, great pictures, lots of HOFers, its unique size, and its cost. Not to downplay the other 60's sets, but it has a lot of uniqueness to it. If I was to seriously collect a 60's set, I would start with the 1964 Topps Giants. Not underrated or undervalued, but a lot of upside potential in satisfaction and cost. This isn't a set to invest in, but definately a set to collect.

1982 Topps FB- RCs of LT, Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz- all possibly the best at their position to ever play. Plus 2nd Year of Montana. Seems like boxes should be worth more than $120. I'm also fond of the 1993 Finest base set because of the design, set size and its significance in the hobby, although lack of RCs really hurts it.

In terms of sheer design, I think the 93 Select FB and 93 Select BB Rookie/Traded are really cool looking.

  • 63 fleer baseball is also somewhat underrated. a lot of it is because it doesnt have all the major stars of that era (aaron, mantle for instance). But, it has a simple yet aesthetically pleasing design and has a number of stars and HOFers to keep most collectors satisfied. If it wasnt for that damn checklist and this set would be very affordable for most collectors.

Ok, maybe undervalued was the wrong word. I guess underappreciated would be the better word. I believe that the 1964 Topps Giants set is underappreciated.

  • 64 Topps Giants seem to run in waves. There are times on Ebay where there are dozens of graded cards available, and than there are times where there is nothing. The set is extremely affordable in PSA 8, although some of the SP's are tough. I'm still looking for the Boyer in PSA 8 or better for 2 years now.
The best thing about the set is its presentation. The holder is huge (not that size mattersimage), the colors on PSa 9's are sharp and brilliant. The players selection is stocked with HOF'ers, but it's interesting to see some of the stars of that time period who didn't become HOF'ers represented in the set. Finally, at only 60 cards, the set is very doable.

Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • My vote would go towards 1934-36 Diamond Stars and 20's Strip cards.

The DS's are among the most colorful cards ever made. You've got rarities like the #1 Grove and the high numbers. These cards are just magical. Here's a mid grade lot from the Huggins and Scott auction...

    image

20's strip cards I really don't know much about. But they seem obscenely cheap. This Ruth sold for $1,500 + the juice in Memory Lane.

    image

How do you go wrong with something like that?
  • cardkid...you;re right about the diamond stars. but theyre catching on. ive been tracking their prices on ebay and the hofers are actually increasing in price.

as far as strip cards...yikes! i'll stay away from those ugly things!!

I also think the R312 set is under appreciated as well. I've been looking into starting one myself. As others said, nice mix of players and nice photos for cards that are ~70 years old.

I've also wondered about the T207 set. I understand that most of the stars in the T205 and T206 sets aren't in there, but it is still a nice tobacco issue, in my opinion.

For postwar sets, I think the 1955 Topps Doubleheader set is a nice set and seems like a nice value.

Butterfinger premiums, R312, most other Goudey and Nat'l Chicle premiums, R423, 1940s and 1950s minor league issues, 1939 and 1940 Play Ball, 1935 and 1936 Goudey, and dare I list the MP & Co. issues.

  • Well in the football world I would have to say its the
1977 Topps Mexican set. Its the rodney dangerfield
of the football card world. There is less than 10 complete sets
known. 2 now 100% psa!!! But still no hoopla. How many regular
1977 Topps football sets are out there 10,000? or more and not one is 100% Psa
Yet. Oh well someday. Viva 1985!!!
Always looking for 1977 topps Mexican Football. Packs and boxes. Need cards #21 and #404 bad $.
  • 1960 TOPPS FOOTBALL, without a doubt, condition sensitive backs, impossible to find centered and loaded with HOF'ers. Why are they so cheap? Makes no sense to me!image

How many kids didn't scratch off the back?

The '55 Topps DH is also a tough one. Sure, there are a couple of high priced cards but considering how condition sensitive they are, should by higher IMO.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
