<< <i>Ziggy, not if they want one set and already have it. >>
But what if the going price were, say, $5000? Are they saying they wouldn't sell at $20K when they could sell theirs, buy another one at the market rate and pocket another $15K?
<< <i>If the market rate were $5K how do they sell theirs for $20K? What they mean is even if the market rate is 20K they will not sell. No one would refuse a free $15K!! >>
How do those home shopping shows sell their stuff for multiples of FMV?
You have pure collectors--who may already have ordered their set. They are done, no more required--how many sets are represented there? 10%? 20%?
Of the 8000 potential sets left in the market:
You have the guys who never collected, but are just beginning, and they are following the hype--how many there?
There are dealers--will they each want a set to show and possibly sell?
There are the speculators--will they hold or sell?
It seems that about mid 20,000 1 ounce gold eagles sell every year from the mint lately--how many of those show up for sale in the aftermarket?
The usual rule for a sellout is something priced at a low enough amount to entice everyone to want a piece. A record sellout just moves it up a few notches.
So--the price was great for all at $2,610--now whats the price going to be for stabilization? My guess is ungraded sets will stabilize at $5200--a doubling. graded sets will push that because some will want perfect sets and there might be only 10% of those around. if only half of the sets are graded, this means maybe 500 perfect sets--price starts to climb pretty fast. The guys who ordered 10 sets may be able to put togther some of these sets-- and the first to the market is going to make a nice return--remember the $5600 Pr70 Dcam Buffalo?
