Kudos to board member DaveG—a fine chapter in Winter’s New Orleans Gold book

I recently received the new Doug Winter New Orleans gold book. The book is great, and I just started looking at it in detail last night. Unlike the previous edition, this book has a really nice history of the New Orleans Mint written by Greg Lambousy. In addition, there is a separate chapter entitled, “How Gold Coins Circulated in 19th Century America”, by our own DaveG! The chapter that he wrote is very informative and well written, and definitely adds a nice backdrop to the coins that are outlined in the book. Although I love reading about how many New Orleans gold coins are in the PCGS and NGS pop reports, DaveG’s information adds much more perspective as to why many New Orleans gold coins are hard to find in high uncirculated grades. Way to go, DaveG!

As for the rest of the book, I hope to write a more detailed review at some point. I was also pleased to see an updated picture of Mr. Winter in this book. In a previous version of one of his books, he is pictured in this frightening 1980’s paisley shirt and sporting a rather whimsical ‘do to boot. He is dressed quite snazzily in this book. image

The topic is about Dave G's excellent, and very well researched chapter in the New Orleans gold book. Dave's work raises the standard for this type of background material and should be read by anyone who proposes to collect or sell nineteenth century gold coins.

The chapter was indeed excellent. Dave has written several articles on the topic for the Southern Gol Society newsletter. He is quickly becoming the leading expert in the field.

    WOW! image

What can I say to that?

Thanks for the kind words everyone (especially Roger)!

I'm glad you liked my chapter - I had a lot of fun doing the research (and I'm still doing research - look for a much enlarged "second edition" sometime in the future.)

Don't overlook Greg Lambousy's chapter, either. It has a lot of great pictures and is based on contemporary sources.
