First Strike Coin - For Real

Just added this to the Sacagawea Collection today. First Mintage Circulating Coin as designated by the mint. Seems the mint does designate or at least has in the past. These were for mint employees and VIP's.

Uh...nice coin, but I don't see the words "first strike" anywhere on that case??Text

    Sweet! What's it grade?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • image Since the first year of this coin was in 2000...... I'd interpret those words as just the first time the coin was offered to the public...? Maybe I'm missing something here.... image

I'd agree with those who say they don't see any evidence of "first strike" and I would interpret the text on the box to mean that the Sac-buc series is the first gold colored made for circulation dollar coin.

The paperwork and the mint box were only given out with coins struck at the special VIP gathering in late 1999. The coins were struck by the attendees and then later shipped to them, as no one was allowed to leave the meeting with coins dated 2000. These were indeed the first struck coins. There were less than 600 coins struck at this meeting and given away. Check out Mike Wallace's web site for info. John has every right to call this a true first strike.

Does it have the high detail tail feathers like the Cheerios Sac?

  • Well, I'm no grader by a long shot but I have a PCGS 2000 P MS-68 and this coin is every bit of that. The relief is higher and the surfaces are cleaner with no discoloration.

It does NOT have the tail feathers of the Reverse of 1999 pattern or Cheerios coins.

And, yes, someday I'll likely post of photo of a Cheerios Dollar I bought. Right now the well is just about dry. Dropped a cool thousand this morning on Uncle Sam's web site to get some 20th Anniversary stuff. I may spring for the gold set by the end of the day. Probably not but maybe.
