Dansco 7070 Question

Hi Everyone:

What do you plan on doing when you complete your Type Set?

Upgrade? Sell? File it away and move on to something else?

I plan on getting some decent images done and then stashing it in
the safety deposit box. May do some upgrading, but probably won't
do a lot of this.

I would be curious as to what others have done (who are complete) or are
planning to do (if not complete).

I have swapped a few coins, not necessarily upgrades, but different dates, coins with a certain look, etc. I have filed it away, but I am thinking of starting a second 7070 with a theme (ie. all Philly coins, all first years of issue, all AG-VG, all circ, all purchased at coin shows, all coins picked out by my son, etc.).

I do pull out my set regularly to enjoy it. image

There are a few coins I've been upgrading. I have one more in mind. I'm alsao working on another series (Bust Dimes) which is also complete, but I'm looking for a few upgrades in that, as well. I have no idea what I'll do when those are done.

I'll add the gold type page.

Since I started my early commemorative registry set I have lost all interest in my type set. I dont see having any money left for anything else. At least nothing of any quality. I will probably revist my 7070 in about 20 years im guessing.

I was planning to pull a few coins out at a time, get them certified (or re-certified), and start again. The certified ones would be put away in the safety deposit box. Well, that plan crashed as soon as the first 6 coins that I was going to send in were lost by PCGS when I submitted at the Santa Clara show in March. 6 of my top coins gone. now I have to rebuild that portion of the book. And I probably won't get them certified. I'll just buy a new book and put the book in the safety deposit box.

I think I would try to upgrade, and maybe get the gold coins page.

But I think I would keep it around because I enjoy looking at it so much. image

Speaking of the 7070. What is the price range to complete this set in nice circulated condition?

A non collecting friend asked this question yesterday when the subject of coins (by me) came up. When I told him this would be a good representation of coinage, he asked how much to complete the set. I didn't have an answer for him.

So folks, how much do you have invested or will have invested when completed?

Including the gold page, mine is about 15K.

I completed my set a while back and have continuously upgraded. Most of the coins are AU-BU with the exception of the early half cent and early large cents which are more along the lines of XF. Avoiding key dates will enable such a set to be put together for about $10K. I figure the set is never complete as long as upgrades are available, although I do have a number of "terminal coins" -- coins I will never upgrade since they have the exact look I seek for my set.

I use mine to prop up one side of a rickety table that I have in a corner. Thing serves dual purposes, holds coins, keeps vases from slipping off the table.

~80% complete, in the process of up and downgrading to get a better match look for the set, mostly in VF-XF. (no gold page) I'm trying to keep with in budget, selling off a couple here and there, and continuously on low key search for the 'right' look. This is by far my favorite project as there are more examples to choose from UNLIKE my Barber insanity-fool's quest.

I keep the Dansco 7070 at home to look at and the kids love it. The Washington Clad quarter and WLH are still empty as haven't found the right coin for that page in over 1 year of looking.

I haven't taken pictures of the 7070 yet as have taken so much time imaging the Barbers, but plan to post here before the year's out even if not 100%. I had done some scans and posted a while back but the images were not very good so I deleted them.

Is there a big downside to storing coins in a Dansco 7070?
Do people commonly crack-open slabs to fill a Dansco 7070?How risky is that?

I've finished it (again). It lives in my bank box; I have good pics on the computer, and now and then I bring it home for a visit. I plan on keeping it long enough for my kids to grow a little older and say "hey, wow!" at. Then? Who knows.

Edit -- as far as price, I think I'm in about $5,500 not counting gold. You could surely do it for a lot less. With certain exceptions that are begging for upgrade, mine strikes a nice balance between state of preservation and not-outrageous cost.

  • Mine will be put up when I'm done (only 10 more holes), and I'll admire it.

I won't be upgrading, as I figure it....... once you start upgrading, it never ends? I'll move on to another Dansco album.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!

I'm not aware of any downside, though some people report the coins toning after a few years. Personally, none of my coins have toned in the album, though I store it in a low humidity environment (a safe with silica gel packs that I recharge regularly.)

It seems to be fairly common to crack coins out for the album, at least among this group. Risky how? I've never damaged a coin cracking it out.

I began upgrading coins even before all the holes were filled, and continue to do so occasionally
Although mostly, as others have mentioned, the book rests in the bank box, waiting for my kids.

I've given this a bit of consideration and I'm still in a quandry...yes, I'll probably upgrade a few coins but I don't know if I'll either ad the gold page or switch over to a Whitman American Type set of Small Denominations (Half Cents to Quarters 1793-present). The Gold page would probably be more doable.

I was in that quandry, and ended up getting a used whitman type set book as a place to to put coins that had been upgraded out of the dansco, and have been adding a few low grade early types to round it out, the whitman goes into more subtypes than the dansco so it's a more comprehensive type set

No half dimes in that album Baley?
  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭✭✭
    I don't recall a Half-Dime page in that album....that's quite the oversight.

    An outrage!

edited to add: That's just plain silly. How can you have a "small cons" album and omit the half dimes that are a whopping 15.5mm in diameter image
  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, I believe 8 or maybe 10 different half dimes, but I can't find any pictures, guess will have to re-image them

my mistake...It's been several years since I sold off the partially completed set. Back then I viewed it as un-doable in light of the need for a 1793 Half Cent, '93 Chain Cent AND a '93 Wreath.

    Sorry to foster the confusion....image

Why do you consider them "un-doable":
    1793 Half Cent
    '93 Chain Cent
    93 Wreath.

  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
know what you're sayin' about the 1793's, lkenefic; tough coins!
(he means they're not practical for an album, too expensive to buy and if you did, you probably wouldn't crack them out of tpg holders and stick them in an album... then again, maybe someone would! image )

anyway, that's another answer to johnsim03's original question of "what now?" once the 7070 is full..
maybe pursue the early types the dansco album doesn't include, even if only in "entry level" grade

some 1790's fun can be reasonably priced

Exactly what Baley said. Those three coins would fetch close to 10K [or more] in todays market (just in G4) and I would be loath to crack them out of plastic to put them into an album. I'd opt for purchasing TPG certified coins due to all of the pretty convincing counterfeits...especially for the '93 Chain Cent. Even at $5K just for the Chain Cent, the specimen you would be getting wouldn't look like much. I'll be holding out for something with a readable date and identifiable as a Chain Cent!

My plan is a two parter:

    1. Start working on the gold page. Two coins already purchased, but they're in 2x2s until I get the gold page for the dansco. I plan for this gold page to take years and years to complete. This will fit in with a shifting focus towards gold coinage in general.

    2. Upgrades. Those replaced will probably be transferred into a second 7070, so I can have both high grade and low grade examples of each coin. The only exception to this will be most of the large cents. High grade examples are more money than I'll spend on coin types that do not move me.

  • I'll finish the Dansco with AU and up. I will most likely do the gold page though I have not yet begun.

After that I will not upgrade, I'm sure there will be a series I will want by date at that point. There are already a couple leading candidates. image

I crack out about half of what goes into the Dansco. I use a variation of the vise method which has been frequently described. As for toning, in a couple years there has not been any that I can tell. Certainly no target toning.

It stays at home not at the safe depost box. My YN son likes to examine whenever there is an addition.
