2009 Lincoln Cent Metal Content

According CW, the 2009 Lincoln cent will have the identical metal content as the original 1909-Copper, Zinc, Tin with mostly copper. Maybe the last year for the cent as collectors hoard them for copper content.

Quote from the Coin Act containing details..

"SEC. 304. NUMISMATIC PENNIES WITH THE SAME METALLIC CONTENT AS THE 1909 PENNY.
The Secretary of the Treasury shall issue 1-cent coins in 2009 with the exact metallic content as the 1-cent coin contained in 1909 in such number as the Secretary determines to be appropriate for numismatic purposes. "

From this it sounds like only the Mint sets or a special Lincoln Cent set (or both) will have the original metals. So the circulating ones will still be copper over zinc.

    Another interesting bit...

"SEC. 303. REDESIGN OF REVERSE OF 1-CENT COINS AFTER 2009.
The design on the reverse of the 1-cent coins issued after December 31, 2009, shall bear an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country. "

Link to the whole Act. Thanks to notlogical for posting it earlier in another thread. image

  • I'm sure they'll also have US Mint rolls like they do the Sacs and JFKs.

Very interesting. I hope that 2009 is the last year though.

That looks like a Washington quarter, to me.

Edit: oh, never mind. Just an oversized sig line picture, I see.

I thought that I had read that the pennies will be made for numismatic purposes only.
(i.e. no business strikes) Therefore, the penny would drop out of the market place
and all prices would be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel.

(If this is true I can see folks starting to hoard pennies now. They'll have 55 gallon
drums in the back of their garages clear full, causing the foundation to settle.... (grin))
