The Forum Made Me Do It™: It this 1955 Frankie I won tonite a monster or a monstroity? *UPDATE 9/6*

Inspired by reading this thread earlier this week, I started poking around eBay looking for a nice 1955 Frankie to tone... er, with tone. image What do you all think of the one in this auction, the seller's pics are shown below:

imageimage

I'm sure the gold PCI holder scared some folks off this coin, but to me it looks an awful lot like some of the mint set toned halves others have posted from later years. Pharmer in particular posted an original 1956 set earlier today with a half with very similar reverse tone. According to the earlier thread that type of toning didn't happen on the 1955 halves... unless in this case, it did?

I'll be sure to take better pics once the coin arrives, at which time I'll update this thread for more opinions.

you'll probably be happy with the coin at that price.

FROM THOSE PICS the coin looks like a mint set toner. One caveat, the pics suck.

    $21 isn't bad...

The 1955 frankies never really tone that nice, in fact this year is known for ugly black road tar type of toning, making rainbowed
    specimens very scarce...

I can't form a opinion based on the image shown, I look forward to better images...

And as for folks being afraid of PCI holders....

Let me tell you, that is a good thing, because if one has a sharp enough eye, many GEMs abound in these holders.

It looks like butt in the pictures, but maybe it will look better in hand....

It is very tough to find a nice eye appeal 55 Frankie....

I did own a rainbowed specimen, a outstanding example for this year..

That sweet GEM now resides in Fodudes registry set....

*UPDATE* It arrived today, here is a quick scan. The obverse does have thin bands of rainbow tone around the rims, while the reverse is a more uniform purple/brown color. One curious thing, on the original scan there was a vertical band of lighter tone up the center of the reverse, I thought it might be a JPEG artifact but in the hand the coin actually has this light stripe.

I'm going to crack this one from its current PCI holder and reshoot it with my digital camera. I'm prepping another economy submission as well, any one think this coin should go along for the ride out west?

Typical of mint set toning for the 1955.

Your pics make the coin look a lot better than the seller's pics, but it's still ugly.

I like it, $26 and change for certified and delivered - not a bad deal at all. Looks like it has real album toning - the old cardboard backed type, not the see through both side kind. I have many that came from such that look similar. (edited to agree with probable mint set toning)
I'll bet the Seller used a Sony Mavica to take the pics with - the tell-tail red LED reflection seen just right of the bell gives it away. Your pic is much better.
  • I would not crack that out, you'll never get another MS65 grade again unless you go to one of the distained TPG's.

You mean like the PCI holder it is in currently?
