Is the recent AT scandal something that Coin World should report on?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I don't think the scandal involving MOC specifically should rise to the level of a story in Coin World. However, do you think that CW should launch an investigation into how easy it is to tone coins in the holders, including rattlers and later generation holders? To me, this issue is very significant. CW did a great deal of reporting on the Ohio Coingate scandal. I would think they would be interested in this recent tragedy.

If CoinWorld reports on this, there needs to be more exiting things happening in the numismatic world. Some coins in old rattler holders were toned. Everyone knows that rattler holders are anything but tamper proof. I don't think it would be nearly as easy to tone a coin in a recent holder, not counting the GSA holders NGC wrapped a piece of tape around.

I think more people were upset by the fact that they were lied to by someone they trusted.

I think they should write about it - they can put it in-between the letters about how much the US Mint's customer service sucks and that guy who keeps finding tie tacks in roll of pennies.

what they ought to do is follow up on their cherrypicker story and find out why those of us that prepaid still do not have books in hand....yet they were available for sale at the ANA show. They let JT have his say in the paper and never followed up on it. Great reporting.

I am to the point that I don't even look at the CW's when they come. I throw them in the trash. The news in there is old and they don't do any investigative journalism or rarely do. They don't seem to worried about the hobby given some of the advertisers that place ads.

Only reason I get CW is because someone got it for me as a gift. Hopefully they don't renew it although it is good for starting campfires for the kids.

I think what has transpired here over the past couple days should make it to the rest of the hobby. Whether that's an article in CW or NN or another publication I don't know. It should be known though.

Don't count on it. Sure, some periodical should have a big series about coin doctoring in general (what is done, how to detect it, examples), but I really don't see anything happening for a while. OTOH, Coin World did have a good series on paper money enhancing a few years back, and Coinage has noted some nth-tier slabbers, even naming names, so something may happen.

Oh, and ask Michigan what he thinks about CW's treatment of Coingate.

    Won't happen.

Coin World is a shill for fraudsters - the full-page ad dealers, "grading" services, etc.

This whole thing is hardly news. There were good reasons why the rattler design didn't last. Most of us do/should know they are not air tight and are also compromisable. That is hardly news. Oxidation of coins in those holders is also not news. Coppercorrodes and silver tones, naturally or otherwise. Subjecting a silver dollar to an atmospere of particular chemistry under high and low pressures is not something unforeseen.

However, with the insane premiums being paid for toned Morgans (among other series) these days, a reminder that even these old PCGS slabs are limited in collector reliance on naturality of toning might not be a bad thing and also might help temper the crazy valuations at least for common or questionable pieces. I wouldn't suggest particularizing the focus on the MoC case.

I think CW will report on this when and if, and only when and if, PCGS decides to issue a press release or otherwise comment publically about the situation.

I think this whole MOC episode is not even a blip on the radar screen---well maybe OUR radar screens, but we are giving our little community here a little too much credit.
Take away 2 maybe 3 hundred characters, and Russ, and we just ain't that big a population.
As for a tragedy---- that commuter flight going down the other day was a tragedy.....

If Coin World can devote over one editorial page per issue to "letters to the editor", the vast majority of which are whines about the US Mint (bad packaging, delays, high prices, who cares) they certainly can devote some ink to this important issue, affecting everyone who likes toned coins.

If you think this should be in CW, write a letter. CW will print almost anything.

The Mint's service sucks and they are a monopolistic ripoff! We need to get rid of the cent! No, we need to keep the cent! The Presidential Dollars are stupid and have no chance unless the dollar bill is eliminated!

Oh, and by the way, some guy on the CU Coin Forum is ATing Morgans in PCGS Rattler holders."

There have already been stories (maybe not in Coin World), about toning coins that are in slabs (they used hydrogen sulfide gas).

I disagree. However if they report on this issue I'd be shocked. Although in my opinion it should be reported as it is BIG NEWS for the toned nuts in the "Coin World."

Maybe I have a bad memory, but I think the whole sealed holder thing was covered in CW a few years back. Weimar White did some experiments where slabs were exposed to various junk (I think sulfur compounds) and the results duly noted. Some slabs protected coins better than others. I think the newer ones did better than the old ones, in general.
