Frivelous second chance offers via Ebay......how big is this problem?

I received at least a dozen emails after my latest run of auctions ended from Ebayers wanting to know if the second chance offers they received were legitimate (they weren't).

I have had this happen before, but never to this extent.

It's getting worse and worse. Just put prominant text in your auction that you do not do second chance offers, any recieved are fake.

Just about every auction that goes for over $1000 is subject to numerous scam e-mails...

It only becomes a problem if someone believes the emails. It is common after bidding on a big-ticket item. In fact, I'd say it is uncommon to NOT receive a bogus offer after being the losing bidder on a multi-thousand dollar item. Since you sell high dollar items from time to time, it would be a good idea to state that you don't do second chance offers in your listings.

The second chance offer scam problem is out of control. eBay should drop the program until they devise a way to make it more secure.

The other big problem with fraudulent second chance offers is that they out number real offers by probably 20 to 1. Then when a real offer is actually received, it's ignored.

If roughly 95% fo the SCO's are a scam, what chance does a legit offer have???

The program has not only completely lost it's intended usefulness, but it perpetuates fraud. Ebay must know this, and they respond to the problem, like they respond to most real problems, by burying their heads in the sand.

  • All the 2nd chance offers I've received of late are just bizarre! I got one wanting to know if I wanted to buy a 2nd coin like the one I just won. I didn't win any coin in the 1st place.

Every time I sell a high dollar coin, my bidders get hit with this scam.

I think eBay should go to an all-internal messaging system using my ebay anyhow. There is no need to use regular email.

I, for one, rarely log onto eBay's site because of listing software that we lease. As it is we only receive about half of the email that is supposed to be forwarded. Some weird flaw having to do with...the software we lease from them. I don't even know how to list an item for sale using the eBay site. image

Not a problem AT ALL if people had the common sense to just verify it in their "my eBay buying page" image

About 18 months ago one of my underbidders wired a grand to some scammer named John in the UK. You'd think he might have gotten a clue from the fact that my name is Russ and I'm in the US.

I get several offers a week especially if I bid on an item over $ 2,000 .These phony 2nd chance offers are culled from expensive auctions not won. Ebay shown little interest in protecting our email address .This why I am switching over to Teletrade .
The Chicago Sun-times on Monday , RAN A GOOD STORY ABOUT phony eBAY 2ND CHANCE OFFERS and how Chicago area residents have been duped out of money and auction items.
This is the start of Ebay's downfall.

I have gotten 2nd chance emails from auctions that I did not win. First step is to see if you have a message from EBAY on 'MY EBAY PAGE'. If you do, chances are good that the offer is legit. Second, you can ask the seller via 'ASK A QUESTION ABOUT THIS ITEM' directly from the listing. If the seller responds that he/she did infact offer a 2nd chance.....then you can be very sure it is legit.......

I have only had a 2nd offer twice and followed the above steps and got both auctions.................Rick

I had the same thing occur recently, especially on the big ticket items!
