POLL: Have toned coins lost their premium?

In light of the latest, and no doubt a little early to speculate, but it would be interesting to know what people are thinking.

See, that's why premiums for toned coins will not dissappear. Many that want the premiums gone, want it gone so they can buy them cheaper BECAUSE THEY LIKE THEM. This indicates a steady demand for them. So. Even if toned coins do lose some of their premium, it will only be a hiccup because when prices start to fall, all those people waiting for the "drop" will begin buying them at cheaper prices, which will in-turn drive the prices right back up.
<< <i>This has always been a matter of personal taste, but I never thought they deserved a premium to begin with and I still don't. >>
exactly! I have never thought toners, no matter how "monster rainbow-ish" should be deserving of a penny over their book value for the grade.
Numerous large buyers of toned coins were already aware of FAR LARGER problems than the one that was just exposed here.
I don't have any AT coins, have been a relatively unsophisticated collector until recently so I feel almost like an outsider looking in at a barroom fight. This is small in the big picture.

<< <i>No, but people may be MUCH more careful in evaluating toners, and while they may be afraid to pay 5-10x sheet for them, they'll still extend a premium. >>
This implies that there is a way to tell AT from NT...there isn't. --Jerry
<< <i>I think that all of the folk who liked toned coins before yesterday will still like them today and most of the "YES" votes are from people who didn't like them in the first place. >>
Or ones who like them but desperately hope the price of toners would plummet so they can afford them.
(For the record, I voted "no" even though I'd like to be able to pick up nice toners cheaply.)
point (and I first thought this in the fall of 2003), the tone market will fall apart. Whenever it
happens, it will be quick.
For coins with all-original surfaces you should demand a premium over coins in the same grade.

I wouldn't be surprised if the numismatic press doesn't pick up on this and it becomes well publicized throughout the industry.

After this blows over in a short while, the certified coin market of toners will be bigger than ever IMO.

Thanks for the compliment. Its one of my favorite Morgans.
I think maybe the premiums have dipped a bit, but certainly haven't been lost.

Buy the coin, not the toning. I have never paid a premium for toning and never will.

I'm with DennisH, et al.
Oh, maybe I would pay a 10% premium for some really nice toning, but multiples of the coin's untoned value? No way.
As long as there are people willing to pay stupid money for toned coins, there will be unscrupulous folks who are willing to artificially tone coins in order to make stupid money off of them.
