POLL: Have toned coins lost their premium?

In light of the latest, and no doubt a little early to speculate, but it would be interesting to know what people are thinking.

No, but people may be MUCH more careful in evaluating toners, and while they may be afraid to pay 5-10x sheet for them, they'll still extend a premium.

This has always been a matter of personal taste, but I never thought they deserved a premium to begin with and I still don't.
    When in doubt, don't.

No but I bet that the folks out there who "wish" they would so they could buy them all voted Yes image

See, that's why premiums for toned coins will not dissappear. Many that want the premiums gone, want it gone so they can buy them cheaper BECAUSE THEY LIKE THEM. This indicates a steady demand for them. So. Even if toned coins do lose some of their premium, it will only be a hiccup because when prices start to fall, all those people waiting for the "drop" will begin buying them at cheaper prices, which will in-turn drive the prices right back up.

exactly! I have never thought toners, no matter how "monster rainbow-ish" should be deserving of a penny over their book value for the grade.

I hope so. Prices have gotten so ridiculous that I've hardly bought anything of significance for a couple of years.

    No.

Numerous large buyers of toned coins were already aware of FAR LARGER problems than the one that was just exposed here.
  • Since less then 1% of real collectors actually know this board exists the affect will be nill.

I predict toned coin premiums will be coming down as I've read "blast white" coins did after dipping became popular. ATing will also become more accepted.

I don't have any AT coins, have been a relatively unsophisticated collector until recently so I feel almost like an outsider looking in at a barroom fight. This is small in the big picture.

This implies that there is a way to tell AT from NT...there isn't. --Jerry
  • I think that all of the folk who liked toned coins before yesterday will still like them today and most of the "YES" votes are from people who didn't like them in the first place.

Or ones who like them but desperately hope the price of toners would plummet so they can afford them.

(For the record, I voted "no" even though I'd like to be able to pick up nice toners cheaply.)

NAH!! In short order all here will be forgotten and only a fraction of coin buffs will even hear of it.

I would pay some premium for eye appealing toning (maybe 20%), but to me the entire tone market is suspect and the folks asking or paying 10x premiums are not going to be around forever. At some
point (and I first thought this in the fall of 2003), the tone market will fall apart. Whenever it
    happens, it will be quick.

For coins with all-original surfaces you should demand a premium over coins in the same grade.

I wouldn't be surprised if the numismatic press doesn't pick up on this and it becomes well publicized throughout the industry.

<Have toned coins lost their premium?>

Not a rat's chance in himage. I think so many members here are turning a very unfortunate decision made by a member, into the devastation of the coin universe. Like I mentioned in another thread, keep your eyes peeled on the next 5, 10, 20 auctions, and try to get nicely toned coins for bargain basement prices.image
After this blows over in a short while, the certified coin market of toners will be bigger than ever IMO.

I think maybe the premiums have dipped a bit, but certainly haven't been lost.

nah... I always make a profit on these, maybe not a lot over what I paid, but with the right buyer I always make a little, in the meantime I enjoy the heck out of them.

There are some neat VAMs I have passed on simply because their toning bid them to the moon. I am certain the buyers are oblivius to the die varieties but like the pretty colors. I can appreciate an natural end roll toner as much as anyone, but I am not going to pay 5 to 10 times sheet to get one.

Buy the coin, not the toning. I have never paid a premium for toning and never will.

    I'm with DennisH, et al.

Oh, maybe I would pay a 10% premium for some really nice toning, but multiples of the coin's untoned value? No way.

As long as there are people willing to pay stupid money for toned coins, there will be unscrupulous folks who are willing to artificially tone coins in order to make stupid money off of them.
