Some of the lessons we learn here

One of the few benefits of being old is that fortunately or unfortunately if you pay attention in life you see a whole lot of things that disappoint you, turn your stomach and leave in you a state of amazement. Sometimes the only positive thing you can take a way from it is a lesson. Someone once said that if an idividual doesn't think they are capable of the most egregious sins then they don't really know themselves. That thought has stuck with me through the years and has enabled me to develope a healthy skepticism. I can't think of a better attribute to have in this hobby.

Some observations:

Even the grading services have a tough time distinguishing between AT and NT coins, that is why you hear the term "market acceptable". Folks that we know and respected experiment with toning and attempt to make money selling the product they produce. Its up to each of us to understand and to either accept or reject that behavior. I submit that others here had they the knowledge would do it too.

People get found out here, sometimes the criticism is warranted and sometimes folks over react and pile on based on a herd mentality. Some folks here just enjoy stoking the fires, however to call this place a lynch mob is judgemental and simply not true. You see opinions all over the place.

Even respected dealers buy coins and mess with them. Once again its up to the market to accept or reject them and once again be cognizant of this. Be very cautious about buying coins sight unseen for more money than you are comfortable with spending and don't just trust the dealer or seller 100% all the time. Listen to what others have experienced with that seller.

I have learned to ignore folks personalities and attempt to learn from what they say. It pains me to see others attacking posters here because they don't like the way the message was presented. We reserve that option for the OF, but even there most of it is done in good fun. Take away the knowledge, it might save you money and disappointment later on. Even the most irrascible personality can pass on wisdom and experience that is valuable.

Take blanket statements with a grain of salt. Enough has been said in the apology thread about that. None of us are perfect no matter how much a friend or irritant we are.

Coin enhancing has been around for a very long time but we don't necessarily know what the long term affects will be. Nothing I've seen posted this week leads me to believe any part of the hobby has been ruined or will affect pricing in the short run or long run. If someone tells you that they haven't seen respected TPG's accepting that kind of toning, listen to them.

Steer clear of those you suspect of nefarious dealings, you don't know what else they are capable of. In other words find somewhere else to buy the coin or muffler or whatever. To continue to do business with them keeps them in business. I don't care how financially advantageous it might by, the next guy might be the one to get screwed.

There are some more but these are the ones on my mind this morning, please feel free to add your own or critique mine.

I tell you what, lets cut to the chase here. I think you are saying that we all need to be responsible for upholding the hobby and not be too quick to lynch someone that has been exposed for doing what we have suspected has been going on for a long time.

Actually, I think that if you look around the forum, you might find a thread on this very subject, that has been going on all night.

Personally, I think that something like this was a long time coming. The problem I see is; a respected company (read TPGs and PCGS in particular) has been harmed. I can't see any respected TPG not having some concerns about what has happened. PCGS will have to get involved in this.

I do agree with your general statement (as I read it), we need to become more responsible for our own conduct and realize that the person who has been caught is not the only one doing it.

Here: just to show that I don't hate MOC, let me give him some sound advice.

    1. Shut up and get off this forum (apologizing will not smooth things over with PCGS)

    2. Do not say or print another word on this subject

    3. Consult an attorney
