Do they assign a new Serial number, and remove the old one from the database,

or do they reuse the number on the new slab?

edited to add- what are the sns for rattlers?

They issue a new label with the same serial number.

If you send them a coin with an old insert color (green, for example), it comes back with whatever the current version of the insert is.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Follow up question-

Re; transgression in "the other thread"

Can anyone tell the SN run for Rattlers?

As someone pointed out, these could be messed with, and then re-holdered into newer more protective versions.

Nope. PCGS uses consecutive serial numbers for a graders daily work, but the block of numbers assigned to each grader changes daily and is assigned at random so you can't look at two serial numbers and even say which one was graded first or when.

What about the "Regrade" service? Will I get a new SN and have to update my Registry Set?

Now that bit of knowledge is about as trivial as it gets. Knowing that, and being asked that question, seems like a one in a million. Go buy a lottery ticket!!! Of corse if you're a retired PCS grader the odds change...

They must be inconsistant on this issue.
I just sent in a coin for regrade in the holder.
I didn't get the upgrade, but it was reholdered with a new number.

No that isn't inconsistant. A regrade is treated just like a new submission. It is cracked out and sent through the regular grading procedure so it gets a new number. Then when it is finished its grade is compared to the original grade to se is compensation is owed for a downgrade.
The original question was for a reholder, reholder keps old number, regrade gets new.

I don't think it is trivial at all. I'm glad i know some more about the nrs. on the PCGS slabs. People ask questions about the nrs. fairly often. What's PCS stand for?
