1806 DBH - What are slide marks considered by PCGS

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
I had one more free submission on my 8 so I submitted this one. I admit I did not look at it closely prior. Had I seen the slide marks I would of submitted another coin. You cant really see them in hand though. Need a glass or pics to see them.

My question is are slide marks considered tooling or is there something else wrong with this half?

And my second (and third) question is - which type of slides cause slide marks? Are the newer Danscos safe?

Thanks for the help
Mike

PCGS and NGC are really inconsistent with these types of marks on coins because you see circulated coinage with newer slide marks on it in many holders, yet I have seen coins rejected because of the same issue. These marks may not be from a holder at all, but may be from the coin sliding in an envelope or across a hard surface.

Some of those marks, like across Liberty's head, look exactly like how slide marks were described in my PCGS book. Tooling is a different thing entirely. Slide marks are unintentional while tooling is a deliberate strengthening of details in order to fake a higher grade.

I think slide marks are more important on MS coins, but I could be wrong.
