Always remember that a $20 contains .9675 tr. oz. net wt. in gold. With this sum in your head you can figure the net weight of any combination of U.S. gold.
In this case, a $10 + a $5 + a $2.50 + a $1 = $18.50 face, or 92.5% of a $20.
92.5% of .9675 = .8949375 tr. oz.
.8949375 + .9675 = 1.8624375 tr. oz. Call it 1.8624 tr. oz.
However, a simpler way to do it is to divide the .9675 of the $20 by 20, giving you the net weight of a $1, 0.048375. Multiply that times the total face value of $38.50 and you save a step.
