I'm trying to get my kids into coin collecting.

As you know, my son, Sean, aka Anaconda2, has gone to a few coin shows with me including Baltimore where he made about $800. He has a mild interest in coins, but being 16, he has a lot of other stuff on his mind, like school, girls and girls.

I have two other children, daughters aged 7 and 9. I'm trying to get them interested in collecting so I bought them two Jefferson nickel coin albums and gave them the 6 or 7 rolls of Jefferson nickels that I bought in that junk silver deal, and told them to fill as many holes as possible. I showed them where the dates and the mint marks are.

They were each able to find about 25 different date/mint mark combinations.

That sounds like a good way. image

What got me into collecting beyond State Quarters? image

I think it was when my dad gave me my 1896 Morgan that I carry as a pocket piece. Then I got a Redbook (2006 Ed.) and here I am! image

I think Jeffersons are cool, but I see them every day. Try giving your kids coins they don't see every day. Like buffalo nickels maybe. It's classic designs like these that really get me excited! image

    Have fun!

  • Good luck--I failed to engender any interest with our son, now age 21.

I fear that the lack of interest by the next generation bodes ill for the numismatic hobby/business.

Take a look at this book, Coin Collecting for Kids, for your 7-year-old. It presents a lot of information in an entertaining way and encourages hands-on learning by collecting.

Do you look through stuff around them or do you retreat to an office/store or other? I let me daughters 2 and 5 to see me look at coins. They want to see them when I'm done and even grab my loupe. We'll see if that changes as they get older.

I plan on teaching my daughter a few key, but achievable, die marriages for half dimes then letting her loose at a coin show.

  • Perhaps Sean might enjoy collecting coins with exposed breasts "boobs" in teenage terms image

It's interesting that you would highlight the fact that he made money at the coin show.

    Does he find numismatics interesting?

Is he at all interested in the history of coins, perhaps the artistry involved?

If it's all about the benjamins, i'll not be shocked to learn that your "namesnake" never again accompanies you to a show......

I've tried to get my daughters into it, too. Like I've said in previous posts.... They want the PLASTIC so they can spend.... not the coins, so they can save.

What is this fascination with plastic ? image
