Can someone haze a coin on purpose to hide cleaning?

I was wondering if this is ever done by doctors to hide signs of cleaning.I know they tone coins to hide stuff but what about forcing a coin to haze over?

Not sure what you mean by hazing but I've played around with covering up cleaning. I tried things like bury in dirt, spit on the coin and let sit on a window, dap with gun bluing, soak in dish soap, put on closed lid of bar-b-que grill while hot, attempted lots of different chemicals, torches and just about anything else I could find. Not much luck and usually distroyed any possible grading of MS70 after that.

I was wondering before I cracked a coin out. Coin looks strong for the grade. It's just ugly due to the strong haze covering it. Not sure how a coin hazed like this one did.....just didn't want to be suprised after I cracked it out and gave it a acetone bath. Coin has quite a spread between grades up and down. Will see. I'll keep my fingers crossed image
  • Randy, All toning does damage to a coin's surface... If a coin tones/hazes, the sulfur that created it creates a different chemical makeup on the surface. If you dip a coin after the toning process, it removes this "damaged" material and you can actually measure the drop in weight from it....

When removing toning, you may just find more problems with what you started with.... good luck.

One of the oldest of the old tricks to tone a hairlined silver coin is to expose it to a steady dose of exhaled cigar smoke. The same effect can be accomplished by(over a longer time frame) burying the coin in cigar ashes. Never tried it myself, but I've been hosed by purchases of coins that had been treated this way. image
