A customer asked me to list his 1921-d Walking Liberty half he has for sale, he recently purchased one of the recent VF's I recieved back from PCGS. The coin is nice original and problem free, but he is wanting a bit too much for me to purchase outright. He is asking $700.00.

<< <i>Nice looking coin, but let me be the first to say for that price it needs to be in PCGS plastic. >>
WHY?
it IS what it IS.
plastic makes it worth more?
LOL
And this is not meant to discredit anybody but any coin worth over $100 in my mind needs the protection on that piece of plastic from a TPG.
If you are buying face to face with a dealer it may not be so, but it makes for a harder sell.
And no I don't want to start any Saturday night fights just stating my view.
WHY?
it IS what it IS.

If you can get a used car with a limited warranty then why would you buy that same car for the same price without one? Having the coin in PCGS plastic would make it easier to sell come sale time. More often than not a PCGS graded coin will sell for more than the same coin raw. If one is buying with the intent of keeping the coin forever then maybe raw isn't so bad. If you plan to sell now or maybe later then getting the coin into PCGS plastic will definitely increase liquidity at sales time as well as enlarge the potential market of those who mite buy it.
If it's that important to others, send it in.
I bought this dime a few months ago for 600.00 and it is raw. It's a 600 dime raw or slabbed IMO.
<< <i>I would not hesitate for one minute to buy a 700 coin from Jim Dimmick with or Without plastic. >>
As you learned here a short while ago not all sellers would be as easy to deal with as jim would be.
all holders have problems in them from time to time. Unfortunately I got one that time....but I have my money back.
On true key dates in circ collector grades the holder does not really mean much. It's not like it makes up 95% of the value as it appears to do in some of the more recent non key date mint issues.
actually, this coin used to reside under PCGS plastic, a PCGS-12. However, my customer does not like slabs, as soon as he buys one, he breaks them out and puts them in his album. In fact, the PCGS-20 he just purchased from me, he has cracked it and placed in in his set already. I think the coin is very nice and original, but a too pricey for me to buy at his asking. But since he is a good customer and has spent nearly 10k with me, Id offer to list it here for him on that chance that someone needs it. However, I would not hesitate to buy this coin at a fair asking price as it "is what it is". If you want to know, I offered him 575.00 for this coin which would leave me room to PCGS it again and leave enough room to ebay it, but he refused.
jim
This is actually why I started buying only PCGS graded coins.
And sorry to say but in My opion your customer is asking for VF35 money for what you said was a F12 coin. From the pictures you put up I was actually thinking VF20.

So exceptionally nice examples of lower grade coins don't command a premium?
