opinions please

i am considering focusing my now scattered collecting efforts into the start of a registry set.......i like all u.s. coins......i already have a few decent modern coins......i need help picking a particular set to start with....is there any registry set that is better known than others that can be completed by a newbie with a moderate budget?......and are there others that i should avoid altogether because they get real expensive?....any comments would be appreciated.....thanks for the help....

It all depends on what you like! The registry is fun, but don't get carried away, compete against yourself and have fun (you will make friends along the way within what ever set you choose). If you like Walking Liberties, I would start out with the short set, 1941 - 1947. If Franklins are your cup of tea, start out with the Date Set then go to the complete set. Each series in the Registry have different types of sets that you can put togother. Buttom line, have fun.image

i have a few washingtons in ms66.....a date set that grows into a complete set is an excellent idea....i hadnt thought of that......i think i can afford most of the washingtons....and there seems to be plenty around....i have been looking at the registry pages .....man there are a lot of different sets to go after....wow........i think i will probably go with washingtons......a date set to begin with.....since i am a newbie still....i think washingtons are fairly safe for me......when i learn more about varieties and the rarer coins.....then i can venture into bigger dollar coins.....anyone that wants to spare me any big newbie mistakes specific to the quarters.......im all ears.....thanks for the input

Once you have picked the series that you want, read everything you can lay your hands on about that series. A good book is worth the investment. Then check TeleTrade and Heritage web sites for past auctions, learn a working knowledge of what date and conditions are worth. Learn to grade for yourself. There are a lot of members, especially on the US Coin Forum that post picture and ask other members to guess the grade (do this, at first you may be way off but you will get better. Free training is good). Don't try to complete your set overnight, remember the 'turtle', slow and steady, you will get there. Make contact with a few members here that have an interest in the same series that you do, ask question, most members are willing to help. Again, bottom line, have fun.

Find a series you like and go for it.

There are not a lot of real stopper in anything past 1950, unless you are looking for a top 5 set, then most all of them get expensive.

If you just want to collect eye appeal and not worry so much about registry points, pick out something you truly enjoy collecting and get started!

    Good Luck!!!
