Heritage: 1872 Florin

<< <i>Victoria Gothic Florin 1872, S-3893, MS61 PCGS. Exceptional luster and toning, but two scrapes in the right obverse field prevent a higher grade. Estimate: $250 - $275. >>

And someone calls themselves a numismatist?? Those aren't "scrapes", they're clash marks!!!!!!image

You know, this is a pretty common problem with TPG grading of Victorian silver.

I have several 3ds I had graded a while back - all got 61-62 grades for similar reasons. There is no way in hell they were that low, but they had strong clashing. image

What exactly is or causes a "clash" mark?

It's my understanding it results from forgetting the ever important planchet before the dies are pressed together...

The result is that part of the image of one side is impressed on the other, so it appears in future strikes.

It's still distracting though, and only die variety collectors appreciate these things. Then, there's that little scratch on Victoria's neck, move on Mac. image

To my old eyes, that looks like a continuation of the clash mark behind the neck.

Hey, they only show the reverse on the link now; maybe they didn't like the commentary.

Still these Gothic florins in mint or near are very attractive, and I think undervalued. Many dates are seriously underrated in unc. I have a few doubles of some dates just because I liked the appearance and there was a fantastic sale of these at Spink in about Nov. of 1999.

Could be Tom, could be, I didn't look at it closely at all. image

This 1999 Spink sale sounds like a nice catalogue to have.

7Jaguars: there is a message at the top of the Heritage page that says...

    "Missing Images?
Pan & Zoom Requires the Flash Plug-in from Macromedia
Download Flash Now or Turn Off Pan & Zoom Images"

Perhaps you don't have that plug-in on your computer or the one you have needs updating.

An extreme case of clashing and a blunt strike...

Numerous other clashing is in evidence on the reverse of the Heritage lot, most notably, the line from Victoria's shoulder running from the edge of the Rampant Lion shield arcing through to the "O" of Florin.

BTW, by chance I've just also noticed that I have the very same die number florin (#59). It is also clashed in the exact same locations which would indicate that it probably employed the same obv. and rev. dies. The Heritage image is insufficient to do most detailed die comparisons.

Yea, no plug in for me. Heritage also puts tracking cookies on everybody as it is (according to my spydoctor program).

This coin likely will go for 350+ is my guess.

Yes, do check the Spink Sale - that doggone 1851 keeps going higher and higher!
