OK I was thinking the washed out look, flat details, wide rim, deformed denticals all kinda looked like a cast fake to me. Another coin ruined by cleaning then. What a waste.
<< <i>Never buy a raw coin an Ebay, please repeat this two hundred times until it sinks in!! >>
I've bought quite a few raw coins on eBay and been quite pleased. I've not been ripped off and coins all went into slabs at the grade sold as. I've bought 5-6 gold coins on eBay with no problems either. Whether or not anyone believes it, there really ARE people dying all the time and their relatives sell their coins on eBay. Most are not the "LQQK!!!!" or "ESTATE!!! SALE!!!" auctions either. Those usually ARE rip offs.
YMMV though. But you can't condemn the whole eBay just because some people are not as well versed in buying raw coins as others. Usually the folks who get ripped don't look for the tell-tale signs. Many people don't even use toolhaus.org to research the seller's feedback. I'm not saying people get what they deserve, just that they need to take care in what they buy.

I have been a collector for over mumbly-five years. I learn something new every day.
The chances of finding a counterfeit circulated pre-1880 branch mint half eagle are quite slim to start with. Further, I would expect to see raised blemishes on a cast counterfeit which I don't see on this piece. The wear also looks real. For these reasons, I think the coin is genuine.

Not buying just looking.
<< <i>1845-O $5 is this a fake? >>
If so, it would fool me.
I agree with the grade of VF-20.
