An 1802 half dime on ebay!!

This coin is truly rare, you don't see these on eBay very often, if at all. Could it actually be real? imageimage

It's absolutely real and it's absolutely beautiful image

A very nice VF with claims to XF. Excellent un-boinked with surfaces. If I were in the market for an 1802 this is the type of specimen I'd be looking for.

Many will claim that the 1802 with a mintage of over 3,000 pieces and just one die marriage should not command the astronomical premium that it does. I honestly don't know enough about the '02 to make an accurate judgement. Some here do though, perhaps they'll chime in.

Edited to add: The seller is JJ Teaparty. Extremely reliable dealer with an excellent reputation. Again, if I were in the market for an 1802 or 1792 I'd have no quams whatsoever from getting it from JJ Teaparty.

I can assure you the coin is real. I had the coin in hand at the recently concluded ANA Summer Convention in Denver. The seller (J. J. Teaparty), PCGS, and myself all concur that the coin is not only genuine, but it is one of the higher grade pieces known for the date. In "The Federal Half Dimes - 1792 - 1837", by Russell J. Logan and John McCloskey, JRCS President David Davis updated the monograph published by Harold P. Newlin in 1882, in which he traced the provenance of all known examples of the 1802 half dime sold in public (and private where known) sales since 1859. A total of twenty-four (24) genuine specimens are now known, most of which are very low grade with varying amounts of damage. The finest known (despite what may be written on an insert in a plastic slab) is EF-45, the second finest grades EF-40. This VF-30 (or thereabouts) specimen is certainly in the condition census. Some high grade specimens placed in prominent museum collections have proven to be counterfeit. This represents a rare opportunity for a well-heeled collector to make a major acquisition.

For $160,000 maybe a better photo would have been in order?

For the same money or less, one could pick up a 1792 half disme from Miller's Mint (they have two!). If I had a boatload of money, the 1792 would be higher on my list than the 1802.

I think that the 1802 half dime is possibly the rarest coin that was struck for circulation and actually circulated. (maybe the 1894-S dime beats it though) That is a very nice example. Duncan Lee had an XF+ a few years ago for $75,000. While it is worth the price it is way out of my range. JJ Teaparty is one of the better dealers around-Liz and Gale run the show now. I have bought many scarce to rare coins from them over the past 10 years. Very reliable and easy to deal with. I suggest that if you need one and have the bucks grab it. It will be the highlight of your collection. I do not consider the 1792 needed for the set. JMHO. Bob

It would be nice... A "box of one" image

Unfortunately it's a bit too steep for my blood (and wallet).

PS: JJ Teaparty is tops! I would definetly trust them.

Odd venue for such a coin, no?

Well, unless the account has been hijacked, since it's Teaparty I'm sure it's legit. I doubt they intend to *sell* this coin on eBay, but it certainly gets more eyes on the fact that Teaparty has one of these for sale.

[Edit to add: They say "All coins sent Registered or Insured mail." Isn't there a $25K limit on registered? Seems to me this one should be sent via Brinks.]

    I agree with Bob!
The 1802 half dime is a very rare coin, 30 - 35 known, this is a nice one that's undamaged, the AU sold for $299K, so the asking price on this one doesn't surprise me at all.
