How under-rated and under-appreciated Half Cents are

Maybe I'm partial because I used to collect half cents, sold off my collection quite awhile ago, and recently bought one in AU condition that I thought was out of this world.

What prompted me to post this is that I was going through dealer's inventories and came accross a really really nice AU58 half cent for ... get this ... less than $200.00.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT?????

I mean...really...it makes me kind of think that I just don't have my head on my shoulders if I am NOT collecting half cents.

This is a coin that is OVER 150 years old, in wonderful condition and with wonderful eye appeal and it's selling for less than two hundred bucks!!!!

And to think that people (myself included) are spending thousands and thousands of hard earned dollars on coins that don't, simply do not stand up to this coin.

Well, I got that off my chest.

When I was a kid, I loved classic head half cents. Every time I went into one of the two local shops in my area, the store owners would ALWAYS tell me to forget about the half cents, and collect the large cents, because more people collect the large cents.

I was a teenager, and didn't know any better so I moved towards large cents, but I've always had an inclination to half cents, especially the classic heads.

They're not as popular as large cents even now, hence some of the obscenely, seemingly, low prices for some of the coins.

There are a lot of challenging and expensive coins in the half cent series, especially if one decides to collect the proof-only issues. Even if not, the 1793 is tough, and the 1796 and 1831 are very difficult. For someone collecting the varieties, the 1796 no pole, the 1802 reverse of 1800, the 1804 C-2, the 1808/7 C-1, and several others make the series a big challenge. Good luck to anyone trying it!

They are VERY undervalued in general. Will demand ever be there to bring them up? I dunno but I might sell off my Braided Hair set instead of waiting.

The Braided hair half cents are very under rated IMO. They one of the few things that haven't increased in price in 3 or 4 years like just about everything else has. They remind me of little cameos.

Half cents are funny bunnies-seems like the lower grades are costly but the higher grades are comparatively inexpensive when compared to other series. I think they are vastly underloved and underappreciated.JMHO. Bob
