Can T206's be short without having been trimmed?

Hi, Just bought a T206 Burch (fielding) card on ebay. The width of the card is the same as my other t206's. The length is short, about the distance of the letter sizes of the player's name on the bottom. It doesnt' look tampered with to me. I'm curious if it's possible it actually was manafactured a little short, and if it will grade. It has a piedmont back.

  • Very Nice looking card there.

It is absolutely possible a T206 measures short and isn't trimmed. T206s (unfortunately) kind of come in all shapes and sizes, though they are all "similar".

However, that doesn't mean it will grade. They may assume it to be trimmed (or it may really be trimmed and you were wrong), or they may not grade it because, trimmed or not, it doesn't meet height requirements. It's a crap shoot. Depends on who gets your card and how they feel that day....there's no telling.

I sent in 7 T206s 2 weeks ago. 5 came back graded, 2 came back trimmed. The kicker is that the one that graded the highest, a 7 (YES!), was the ONE I'd believed to be trimmed. It was shorter than the others, and clearly shorter than the 2 that came back as being trimmed. So there is no good answer on that one. Sorry.

    Get that card graded, ASAP!!
  • Hmm, thanks. I'm waiting on two more cards in the mail a T206 Fred Clarke (holding bat) and a T206 Kleinow (Boston variation) and then sending them all off in next few days. Hoping for a 4 on the Clarke, a 5 on the Kleinow and a 6 0r 7 on the Burch (providing it fits the size requirements). Does anyone here have alot of advice on selling on ebay? I recently sold a PSA 4 T206 Miller Huggins Portrait for $166, doing a 3 day auction...does that really matter? or would a 5 day be better???
  • incidentally, i agree. It looks close enough to me that I would get it graded. the worst that can happen is you lose $20 for the grading. The best that can happen is that you too have a 7 there. Again, i believed my 7 to be trimmed....but they didn't, so I sure am glad i tried.
  • Are you buying high grade raw examples off ebay?
  • yes I try to buy somewhat high grade commons or midgrade HOF's for below market value...so sometimes purchases can be few and far betweeen.

    Great responses from everyone.

This was asked on the eBay board T206 Peidmont Cards - Can they be slightly smaller and not trimmed? by the same person and there are alot of details about the seller that wasn't posted here that may or may not change peoples opinions on this card.

    1909-1911 T206 Piedmont Burch

Notice that this seller deals in graded cards by many companies so he knows what he's doing.

Will quote one of the guys from eBay.

<< <i>Well I wouldn't get my hopes up on this one. He covers himself by putting Card may or may not have been trimmed and after looking over what the seller has up currently (Almost all SGC graded cards) and his past sales (Graded cards from various companies) I would almost bet that he had sent this one (along with the other raw ones he had up) in to various companies and it came back as having been trimmed.

Doesn't mean that you didn't get a good deal but this seller looks like he is very knowledgeable in what he has, so highly doubt that he wouldn't have had this one graded unless it had a problem. >>

Granted anything is possible but by looking over the sellers history the odds are that something is wrong with this card.

While there's certainly size variance among T206's, I don't like that top border on the Burch very much. To put it mildly. I also ran some cert numbers that were close to those on his recently auctioned PSA-graded T cards. My search wasn't exhaustive and I didn't notice the Burch, but there were enough rejects to lead me to believe the Burch won't find its way into slab.

  • Well perhaps I was taken on the purchase, does seem like $18 is too good to be true. Guess it falls into the eyes of the graders. I was messing around on 707sportscards.com looking at some of the graded t-206s that they have for sale on there, quite a few were well short of the border frame inside the slab, so i dont know, i guess if i knew enough to always be right i'd have alot more money in this and could quit my day job. my name is the same on ebay, if someone wants to look at the kleinow i just picked up on there, item number 120020926962, then put your two cents in on that one, its kinda vague and i really dont think the seller had much background in cards at all, kinda hard to say until i get the card in my hands but i'm hoping for a psa 3 or 4 out of it. i'll be sending a few cards off next week, and will update everyone on what happens with the burch.
  • I'm just curious about how much knowledge you carry on t206 or how long you've been collecting?
  • i've been dabbling with them for about a year, along with the t205s, e95's and such,....this is just the first card in that time period i've gotten that looked short, then when i started looking around at others graded, i saw a few short ones as well, so was just curious

That card definitely looks trimmed to me judging by the image.
